Baseball Drops Non-Conference Decision To CCNY

Tait drives in team’s lone run

Fishkill, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team was back in action Friday night against the City College of New York, dropping the non-conference affair 7-1, extending their losing streak to five games. Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y) drove in the Knights' lone run with an RBI single in the first inning and Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) contributed two hits, the only Knight with multiple hits on the night.

How it Happened
  • The Knights got on the board first with an RBI single, giving them an early lead at the end of the first inning.
  • Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) started off the inning with a single up the middle and went on to swipe both second and third.
  • Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y) drove in Goodwin with an RBI single to right field to give the Knights a 1-0 at the end of the first inning.
  • The Beavers tied the game up in the third inning when Ethan Angress started the inning with a double to right field, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was driven in by Kevin Budzinski with a groundout to shortstop.
  • The game then went scoreless until the fifth inning when Angress tripled to left center field, driving in teammate John Creegan. Kevin Budzinski preceded to drive in Angress on a groundout to second base, pushing the Beavers lead to 3-1.
  • The Beavers continued their hot hitting in the sixth inning with two more hits, driving in two more runs. Stephen Suprun started off with a single to right center field, eventually scoring off of a Creegan single. The second run of the inning came off an error by the Knights, pushing the Beavers lead to 5-1 at the end of the sixth inning.
  • The Beavers ended their night with two more runs in the ninth inning when Jonathan Rivera singled through the left side of the field, knocking in two more runs. This extended the lead to 7-1 going in to the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • The Knights failed to score a run after jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead on two hits in the first inning, only connecting for four more hits for the rest of the game.
For the Knights
  • Tait  finished the game 1-for-2, with two walks and an RBI single, driving in the Knights only run of the night.
  • Merlin recorded two hits in three at bats with one walk, ending the game as the only Knight with multiple hits.
  • Goodwin went 1-for-5 on the night, scoring the Knights lone run in the first inning.
  • Cullen Roper (Stratford, Conn.) and Tyler Crocitto (Staten Island, N.Y) each contributed a hit apiece, being the only other Knights with hits.
  • Mike Scotto (Putnam, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the start, allowing three runs in 5.0 innings.
For the Beavers
  • Creegan went 2-for-4 on the night, driving in one run and scoring two runs himself.
  • Angress contributed two hits in three at-bats, scoring two runs and driving in one run in the 5th inning.
  • Tyler DiBlasi was one of three Beavers with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 on the night.
  • Rivera went 1-for-5 and drove in two runs, and Budzinski drove in two runs himself.
  • Chris Lamond, Suprun and Mike Savino each added a hit apiece for the Beavers.
Game Statistics
  • The Beavers outhit the Knights 10-6 in the game
  • The Knights committed two errors and the Beavers committed one on the night.
  • The Beavers had three players with multiple hits, while the Knights only had one.
  • This was the 10th time these two teams have played each other since 2012, resulting in six wins for the Knights and four wins for the Beavers.
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary will start Skyline Conference play Sunday with a doubleheader against Purchase College in Newburgh, N.Y., with hopes to start off conference play strong at home.
  • The City College of New York Beavers will continue their non-conference play with a double header Sunday at Albertus Magnus College.
