Busy Week Starts With Doubleheader Against New Paltz

Knights open conference play Sunday afternoon

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team begins a five-game week on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against New Paltz at 3:00 p.m. at Heritage Financial Park (formerly Dutchess Stadium). The Knights return to the Stadium Friday evening for a contest with CCNY before opening Skyline Conference play on Sunday on campus against Purchase.
 
At A Glance: The Knights return from Florida with a 3-8 overall record after going 1-4 in the Sunshine State at the RussMatt Invitational.
 
Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) has his 2023 season off to a strong start, hitting an even .400 over 35 at-bats. Tait is tied for the team lead with six RBI and has scored five runs. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) joins Tait with a team-high six RBI and is also tied for the team lead with eight runs.
 
Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) is tops on the team with four doubles and is tied with Goodwin for the team lead in runs with eight. Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) has ripped two doubles and a pair of triples and ranks second on the team with 10 base hits.
 
Coming off a strong 8.0 inning appearance in a victory over Rutgers-Newark, Brian Gregory (Florida, N.Y.) holds a team best 2.25 earned run average over 16.0 innings pitched. Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) leads the team with 17.0 innings pitched and is working to a 2.65 ERA.
 
A Look At New Paltz: The Hawks enter Wednesday's twinbill at 3-6 overall and are coming off a doubleheader split with Kean on Friday.
 
Christopher Sais begins the week hitting .381 for the Hawks with Fabian Apicella batting .345 with three doubles and eight RBI. Justin Harvey paces the team with 11 hits and has driven in five runs for the Hawks.
Billy Moeller leads the pitching staff with 19.2 innings pitched and is working to a 3.66 earned run average. He has fanned 15 hitters against five walks while allowing opponents to hit .267.
 
Recent History: The two local foes have met 20 times since the start of the 2008 season with New Paltz holding a 14-6 record. The Hawks have won four of the last five meetings, with the Knights posting an 8-6 win in game one of a doubleheader on March 5, 2022.
 
Previewing CCNY: The Beavers are coming off a doubleheader split with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Friday and stand at 3-9 overall on the season.
 
Jonathan Rivera is off to a good start for CCNY, hitting .405 over 42 at-bats with six extra base hits, including two home runs, to go along with 11 runs and eight RBI. Stephen Suprun checks in with a .343 batting average and has driven in a team best 11 runs.
 
James Dean Johnstone holds a 2-2 record on the mound and has worked 26.2 innings while posting a 4.72 earned run average. Johnstone has fanned 27 hitters and is allowing a .248 opponent batting average.
 
Recent History: The Knights and Beavers will meet for the 10th time since the start of the 2012 season with the Mount holding a 6-3 record in the previous nine matchups. Mount Saint Mary has won the last four contests in the series, including a doubleheader sweep on March 11, 2022.
 
A Look At The Panthers: Purchase closes out its Florida trip with a game Hope Hope on Wednesday. The Panthers have dropped their last four outings and stand at 5-6 overall through 11 contests.
 
Tyler Della Mura is hitting an even .500 for the Panthers and is second on the team with seven RBI. Matt Castrogiovanni checks in with a .379 batting average and is tied for the team leader in hits with 11, joining Liam Daly who is hitting .355. Daly currently sits atop the team leaderboard with nine runs scored and eight RBI.
 
Myles Scarry has worked a team-high 15.1 innings on the mound to date and has recorded 19 strikeouts while working to a 5.28 earned run average.
 
Recent History: Since 2012, the Knights and Panthers have hooked up 14 times with the Mount holding a 9-5 record. The Knights have won the last four decisions in the series and five of the last seven.
 
What's Next: The Knights continue Skyline Conference play with home dates with the College of Mount Saint Vincent and St. Joseph's-L.I. on April 1 and 2.
