Knights Take Season Opener From Alvernia

Gallucci posts five points to lead offense

Newburgh, N.Y. – Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.) totaled five points and Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) finished with four points as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a 10-4 home victory over Alvernia Saturday afternoon.
 
Mount Saint Mary moves to 1-0 with Saturday's victory, while Alvernia drops to 1-1 through its first two contests of the year.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary broke the game open in the first period, scoring five of the six goals in the stanza.
  • Gallucci and Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) each scored their first goals of the season in the initial four minutes of the tilt to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead.
  • Following an Alvernia man-up goal cut the advantage to a single shot, the Knights got two straight goals from Green Wright and a Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) man-up tally to close out the scoring in the first quarter. Gallucci assisted on the second Green Wright tally and the Travers marker to close out a three-point quarter.
  • Each team scored twice in the second frame with Alvernia pulling to within 5-3 with the first two markers of the quarter.
  • Gurello scored his second of the game to push the Knights in front 6-3 ahead of a Joe Keating (Pleasantville, N.Y.) tally, off a feed from Green Wright, to send the Knights to the intermission leading 7-3.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the opening half with a 19-9 advantage in shots.
  • The Knights held a 17-14 edge in groundballs prior to halftime.
  • Alvernia won six of the 11 face-offs taken prior to the break.

  • Gallucci rounded out his big day with his second goal of the contest, finishing off a pass from Green Wright, to close out the scoring in the game.

  • Carmine Comitini (Staten Island, N.Y.) forced two turnovers and secured three groundballs.
  • Making his collegiate debut, Kenny Leen (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win in goal with four saves.
 
For Alvernia
  • Colin McFadyen led the Golden Wolves with two goals, adding two groundballs.
  • Capasso finished with a goal and an assist, adding three groundballs.
  • Christian Wright led all players in the game with 10 groundballs.
  • Jack Kenney went 11-for-17 in face-offs and earned six groundballs.
  • Dane Sabarese made nine saves in goal.
