Purchase, NY — Knights Swimming traveled to SUNY Purchase Friday evening to face the Panthers and St. Joseph's University Long Island.
Swimming through sore muscles from a tough training week back from Thanksgiving break, the Knights women put up a win against SUNY Purchase (117-54) and tied with St. Joseph's (89.5-89.5). The men's team fell just short of a win against SUNY Purchase, with a final score of 75-79.
Women's Recap
The meet kicked off with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Emily Gursky (Oakville, Conn.), Grace MacHugh (Newburgh, N.Y.), Kitty Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) and Cayla Nicholas (Wappinger Falls, NY) swam to first place with a time of 2:06.21.
Individual wins of the evening came from Meghan Wurster (Newburgh, NY), MacHugh and Nicholas.
Wurster took care of the 1,000-yard freestyle once again for the Knights, placing first at 11:58.05, followed by Victoria DeLuca (Hopewell Junction NY) who came in third at 15:27.81. Wurster also won the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:55.76.
MacHugh won the 200-yard freestyle race (2:14.65), followed by Rhiannon Mulkerrins (Staten Island NY) who placed third at 2:32.87.
Nicholas had an exciting race in the 50-yard freestyle, tying for first place with a St. Joseph's swimmer at a time of 26.99. She went on to win the 100-yard freestyle as well, with a 59.15.
Men's Recap
Even though the night ended in a loss, the men's team had a hard-fought battle, with plenty of strong swims across the board. Individual wins came from Jackson Lerner (Bayside, N.Y.) and Tyler Williams (Middlebury, Conn.).
Lerner swam a 2:11.13 to win the 200-yard freestyle race, before winning the 100-yard butterfly later in the meet (1:02.74). Lerner also won the 500-yard freestyle for the men (6:08.91).
Williams won the night's 100-yard backstroke, coming in at 1:08.91.
Michael D'Ambrosio (Staten Island, NY) had a strong second-place finish in the 100-yard breastroke, with a time of 1:15.54.
Christopher Christiano (Waterbury, Conn.) also gained key points for the Knights in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming to second place at 28.41.
Up next, Knights Swimming will be back in action at home in the Kaplan Center Pool on Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. to face the College of Saint Rose.
