Knights Drop Home Decision To Vassar

Martinez makes three saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team dropped its second straight contest at home to start the season on Sunday, falling to local foe Vassar 4-0. Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) made three saves in net and a trio of Knights finished with two shots.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-2 overall on the season, while Vassar evens its 2022 record at 1-1.
 
First Half
  • The Brewers broke a scoreless tie with the eventual game winner off the head of Danny Berry in the 24th minute. He directed a corner kick started by Kinlay Watkins at 23:54 for his first goal of the season.
  • Vassar doubled its lead late in the opening frame when Derek Sando scored his first of two goals on the day. He finished off a crossing pass from Jackson Hall at 42:56 to send the visitors into the intermission with a two-goal lead.
  • Vassar finished the opening period with a commanding 17-3 advantage in shots.
  • Both Martinez and Vassar keeper, Eric Wnorowski, finished the opening 45 minutes with two saves apiece.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary had two chances to slice its deficit in half in the early stages of the second half, both from freshman Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). He sent a shot wide in the 48th minute and headed a corner kick just over the bar in the 61st minute.
  • Vassar held off the early Mount surge and added two more goals in the final 10 minutes to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Sando rifled home a free kick in the 80th minute for his second goal of the game before Owen Fauth converted a penalty kick at the 83:10 mark of the contest for the final 4-0 decision.
  • Shots in the second half were even at 4-4.
  • Corner kicks after halftime went to the Brewers 2-1.
  • Martinez made a single save after the break for the Knights.
For The Knights
  • Martinez turned aside three shots for the Mount in the contest.
  • Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.), Mazzarelli and Quinn Tynan (Schenectady, N.Y.) each posted a pair of shots with Tynan and Wyant each putting a shot on target.
  • Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished with the other shot for the Mount.
 
For The Brewers
  • Sando finished with his first two goals of the season, totaling three shots in the game.
  • Berry and Fauth each scored their first goals in 2022, with Berry notching the deciding tally.
  • Watkins and Hall collected their first points of the year with helpers.
  • Wnorowski earned the shutout with two saves in goal for the visitors.

  • Vassar outshot the Mount 21-7 overall and 7-2 in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 9-3 count.
