Men’s Soccer Tripped Up At #8 Middlebury

Martinez makes career-high 10 saves

Middlebury, Vt. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team took to the road for the first time in 2022 and suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of #8 Middlebury Tuesday afternoon. Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) finished the afternoon with a career-high 10 saves in goal.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-3 in the early going of the 2022 season, while Middlebury scores a victory in its first outing of the campaign.
 
First Half
  • Martinez made a pair of saves in the opening 12:08 to keep the Panthers off the board, including one from point blank range off the foot of Gavin Randolph.
  • Middlebury got on the board in the 16th minute when Tyler Payne worked his way through the box and scored to the far post for the eventual game winning goal.
  • Mount Saint Mary was held without a shot in the opening 45 minutes with Middlebury taking a 10-0 edge in shots into the intermission.
  • Corner kicks also went to the Panthers prior to the break, 2-0.
  • Martinez rounded out the first half with five stops for the Knights.
 
Second Half
  • Neither team would find a goal in the second half, while Middlebury held an 11-3 advantage in attempts after halftime.
  • The Knights' first shot came off the foot of Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) in the 61st minute.
  • Quinn Tynan (Schenectady, N.Y.) added a shot in the second half for the Mount.
  • Martinez made five more stops in the second half.
 
For The Knights
  • Wyant finished with two of the team's three shots with both shots getting on target.
  • Tynan added a shot on goal for the Mount.
  • Martinez recorded double-digit saves in a game for the first time as a Knight. He has made 15 saves through three games and holds a .682 save percentage.
 
For The Panthers
  • Payne potted his first goal of the season, the game winner, at the 15:11 mark of the contest.
  • Jordan Saint-Louis led all players with five shots in the game, including three shots on goal.
  • Ryan Grady earned the shutout in goal with a trio of saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Middlebury held the advantage in overall shots 21-3 and in shots on goal 11-3.
  • The Panthers took each of the five corner kicks in the contest.
  • Fouls were whistled 17-15 against Middlebury.

  • Mount Saint Mary heads to Fredonia for two games at the Blue Devil Classic starting on Friday.
