Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season Wednesday night following a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Sarah Lawrence.
Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) finished the evening with three saves in goal for the Knights.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 2-7-2 overall on the season and 2-1-1 in conference play, while the Gryphons, who scored their first ever victory over the Knights, improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 against league rivals.
First Half
- The Gryphons struck just 91 seconds into the game with the eventual game winner.
- Cora Colvin collected a loose ball near midfield and streaked down the middle of the field and buried her sixth goal of the season at 1:31 to give the visitors all the scoring they would need.
- Shots in the first half were even at 5-5.
- Sarah Lawrence keeper, Bridgette Lee, turned aside a pair of shots to keep the Mount off the board.
- Mount Saint Mary went into the intermission with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Second Half
- The Mount stayed within a shot until the 75th minute, but would not get an attempt until an Angie Maniero (Vineland, N.J.) attempt sailed high in the 87th minute.
- Viktoria Balbin gave the Gryphons the final 2-0 advantage with her third goal of the season in the 75th minute.
- She gained control of the ball at the top of the box and rifled home the insurance tally at the 74:04 mark of the contest.
- Sarah Lawrence finished the second half with a 7-2 advantage in shots.
- Kakavas made all three of her saves in the second frame.
- Lee made one a stop late to preserve the shutout.
For The Knights
- Kakavas made her third straight start in goal for the Knights, finishing with three saves. She moved her save total on the season to 21.
- Seven different Knights finished with one shot in the game with Wendy Guerra (Newburgh, N.Y.), Emma Mihale (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Kaitlin Hansen (Port Jervis, N.Y.) each recording a shot on goal.
For The Gryphons
- Colvin scored her team leading sixth goal of the season and picked up her third game winning goal of the year with her first half tally.
- Balbin tallied for the third time and moved her season point total to nine.
- Lee finished the shutout with a trio of saves.
Match Statistics
- Sarah Lawrence closed the night with a 12-7 advantage in overall shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
- Corner kicks in the contest went to the Knights, 4-2.
- Fouls in the tilt were called 10-9 against the Mount.
