Knights Push Winning Streak To Six; Riddle Set Four-Set Kills Record Against John Jay

Riddle puts away 27 kills against Bloodhounds

Newburgh, N.Y. – Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) totaled 41 kills, including a new four-set single match record 27 against John Jay, as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team scored 3-1 victories over the Bloodhounds and league rival the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Knights topped the Dolphins 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-15 in the first match of the day before battling to a 25-23, 25-27, 25-11, 26-24 victory over John Jay.
 
Saturday's victories push Mount Saint Mary to 7-4 overall on the season with the win over Mount Saint Vincent moving the Knights to a perfect 2-0 in conference play.

How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary moved in front 2-0 in the match following a pair of 25-17 victories in the first two sets.
  • The Knights opened a 6-0 lead in the opening frame before using 7-1 run to open a 22-12 advantage.
  • Erin Lema (Centereach, N.Y.) put away a kill and added an ace before the Mount took advantage of a Mount Saint Vincent miscue to open a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second set, the Knights used a 4-0 run, keyed by four Dolphins miscues, to open a 10-7 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary then used a 6-0 spurt, highlighted by an Angelyse Orellana (Newark, N.J.) winner, to grab a 17-10 lead.
  • After the visitors pulled to within 20-16, the Knights scored five of the final six points, including kills from Lema and Riddle, to take the two set advantage.
  • After being limited to six kills in the third set loss, the Knights rebounded with 15 kills and hit .419 in the fourth set to close out the victory.
  • The Knights used two separate 6-0 runs early in the frame to pull in front 12-3.
  • The Knights surged in front 20-6 on back-to-back kills from Lema and after the Dolphins pulled to within 24-15, Riddle closed out the contest with her 14th kill of the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle led the Knights with 14 kills and hit . 364 in 33 attempts. She rounded out the win with four digs and a pair of aces.
  • Lema put away 12 kills and hit .450, closing out a double-double with 10 digs while adding three aces.
  • Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) totaled six kills for the Knights.
  • Brooke Lavelle (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Mary Millano (East Patchogue, N.Y.) each finished with three blocks.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 32 assists and added three kills and four digs.
  • Jenna Cullinan (Levittown, N.Y.) finished off the win with a team-high 12 digs.
 
For The Dolphins
  • Elizabeth Flores posted a match-high 16 kills to go along with 10 digs.
  • Isabella Garcia led the team with 11 digs and totaled four aces.
  • Lydia Aryee handed out 28 assists and lifted six digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a 39-29 advantage in kills, hitting .221 as a team.
  • Aces in the contest went the way of the Dolphins, 12-9.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a 5-2 advantage in total team blocks.

How It Happened
  • The two teams battled tightly over the first two sets, with the Mount collecting 14 kills in the opening frame to grab a 1-0 lead.
  • After the Bloodhounds scored five straight points to pull to within 25-23, Riddle put away a kill to give the Knights a one set advantage.
  • In the second frame, the Knights used a pair of John Jay miscues to knot the score at 24-24.
  • The two sides alternated points, including a kill from Riddle, before the visitors got a kill and a Mount error to post a 27-25 victory and even the match at a set apiece.
  • Mount Saint Mary responded by hitting .474 in the third frame to move back in front 2-1.
  • The Knights outscored John Jay 11-1 to start the set, with Riddle putting away four winners.
  • The Mount moved in front 20-7 on two straight Lema winners before using a pair of John Jay errors to secure the set victory.
  • Mount Saint Mary was limited to just five kills in the final frame, but was able to take advantage of 12 John Jay attack errors.
  • The Knights held leads of 6-1 and 9-3 in the early going, but saw John Jay score five straight points late in the set to grab a 22-21 advantage.
  • After falling behind 24-23, the Knights used two attack errors from the visitors and an ace from Lema to collect its sixth straight win.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle finished the contest with a season-high 27 kills and broke the previous four-set record, 25 set in 2004 by Kristie Murphy, after hitting .375. With her output on Saturday, Riddle stands at 958 kills and just 35 short of tying the program record.
  • Riddle finished off a big match with 13 digs, two aces and a block.
  • Lema lifted 10 digs and finished the win with four kills and four aces.
  • Lavelle picked up four more blocks and put away two kills.
  • Cammarata handed out a season-high 36 assists, closing a double-double with 13 digs to go along with three aces. Cammarata also checked in with a team-high five blocks.
  • Cullinan equaled the team-high with 13 digs.
  • Orellana added 10 digs.
 
For The Bloodhounds
  • Faith Harer led the team with 11 kills and a match-high 19 digs.
  • Rylea Sandel chipped in 10 kills.
  • Paige Sadowitz posted five aces and added six kills and six digs.
  • Meghan Smith handed out 31 assists and totaled 11 digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a slim 41-36 edge in kills, hitting .173 as a team.
  • John Jay rounded out the match with a 15-11 advantage in aces.
  • Total team blocks went to the Mount 6-2.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights travel to league rival Farmingdale State Tuesday night.
