Knights Dealt Road Loss At Yeshiva In Skyline Opener

Wyant pots first goal of the season

Teaneck, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team opened Skyline Conference play on Sunday morning on the road at Yeshiva and suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Maccabees. Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) was the Mount's goal scorer, picking up his first marker of the season.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 2-4-1 overall on the season and to 0-1 in conference play, while Yeshiva moves to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 against league rivals.
 
First Half
  • Yeshiva potted the first two goals of the game inside the first 38 minutes of action on Sunday.
  • Lucas Baredes scored his sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute after finishing off an assist from David Attiban at 17:34.
  • The Maccabees found the eventual game winning goal just under 20 minutes later when Yonatan Reiter finished off a feed from Ethan Fettaya at 37:25 to send Yeshiva into the intermission with a two-goal advantage.
  • Shots before the break were nearly even, with Yeshiva holding a slim 10-9 advantage.
  • First half corner kicks went to the Mount 2-0.
  • Mount Saint Mary goalkeeper Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) closed the opening period with a trio of saves.
  • Benjamin Brener held the Knights off the board with five first half stops.
 
Second Half
  • Yeshiva spread its lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute when Fettaya buried his third goal of the season from Baredes at 63:07.
  • The Knights would finally break through just under seven minutes later when Wyant found the back of the net for the first time in 2022. He buried a free kick started just outside the box at 69:43 for his 20th career goal.
  • Yeshiva spread its lead to the final three-goal advantage in the 80th minute when Rafael Cohen deposited his third goal of the campaign off a turnover at 79:59 to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary outshot Yeshiva 10-4 in the second half, but could only find the one marker.
  • The Knights took the only two corner kicks after halftime.
  • Each goalkeeper closed the second stanza with a pair of stops for their respective teams.
 
For The Knights
  • Wyant pushed his career goal total to 20 and his career point total to 55 on Sunday with his first goal of the season. He finished the day with a team-high five shots, including two on goal.
  • Wyant moved into the team lead in points with four following Sunday's tally.
  • Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Rob Kaufman (Mullica Hill, N.J.) each recorded two shots on goal for the Knights.
  • Martinez closed the day with five saves for the Mount.
 
For The Maccabees
  • Baredes and Fettaya each closed the win with a goal and an assist for Yeshiva.
  • Baredes matched the game-high with five shots, including two on goal.
  • Brener finished the day with seven stops in goal for the Macs.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary held a 19-14 advantage in overall shots, while Yeshiva posted a slim 9-8 edge in shots on target.
  • Mount Saint Mary took the only four corner kicks in the contest.
  • Fouls on the day went against Yeshiva, 15-10.
