Knights, Bengals Play To Scoreless Draw

Martinez posts second straight shutout

Fredonia, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team closed out play in the 2022 Blue Devil Classic hosted by Fredonia with a scoreless draw against Buffalo State Saturday afternoon. Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) finished the tilt with his second straight shutout for the Knights.
 
Saturday's draw moves Mount Saint Mary to 1-3-1 overall on the season with Buffalo State moving to 1-1-2 through four tilts.
 
First Half
  • The two teams went into the intermission at 0-0 although Buffalo State rounded out the first half with an 8-1 advantage in shots.
  • The Mount's lone shot of the opening 45 minutes came off the foot of Jake Kwong (Staten Island, N.Y.) at the 29:05 mark.
  • Martinez finished the first half with a trio of saves for the Knights, including two in the final four minutes of the period.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks prior to the break.
 
Second Half
  • Neither team would be able to find the back of the net in the second stanza, with the Bengals holding a slim 4-3 advantage in shots after halftime.
  • Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) recorded two shots early in the second frame, including one on goal.
  • Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) added the other attempt for the Mount in the 57th minute, but it was turned aside by Buffalo State keeper Shae Wirt.
  • Martinez made two more saves after halftime to keep the Bengals off the board.
  • Corner kicks in the second half were even at 1-1.
 
For The Knights
  • Martinez posted his second straight shutout with five saves for the Knights. He lowered his goals against average to 1.40 and raised his save percentage to .781 on Saturday.
  • Wyant led the Mount with two shots, including one on goal.
  • Kwong and Ramirez each finished with a shot on goal for the Knights.
 
For The Bengals
  • Manu Prieto led all players with four shots, including one on goal.
  • Ramazani Juma and Adam Saif each finished with two shots.
  • Wirt earned the shutout in goal with three stops.
 
Game Statistics
  • Buffalo State finished the game with a 12-4 advantage in shots, but a slim 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Bengals finished with the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1.
  • Fouls in the tilt went against the Knights, 17-13.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights return home to play host to SUNY Poly on Wednesday.
  • Buffalo State travels to Alfred on Tuesday.
