Mount Saint Mary Stifles Mitchell, 15-3

Gurello, Rodriguez each score four goals

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team closed out the non-conference schedule in convincing fashion Wednesday night, dispatching Mitchell by a score of 15-3. Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) each finished the night with four goals for the Mount.
 
Wednesday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 6-3 overall on the season while the Mariners fall to 2-9.
 
How It Happened
  • After being held to just one goal over the first 13 minutes of the contest, the Knights potted three goals in the final 2:39 of the opening period to grab a 4-0 advantage. Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the first with what proved to be the game winning goal with six seconds left in the frame.
  • Rodriguez and Gurello both scored in the second stanza for the Knights with Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) and Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) adding assists as the Mount went into the intermission with a 6-0 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary maintained the shutout with the only two goals of the third frame with Rodriguez and Martin supplying the markers. Rodriguez added an assist on the Martin goal.
  • Mitchell would not get on the board until the 10:47 mark of the fourth frame, scoring all three of its goals in the final stanza.
  • Mount Saint Mary erupted for seven goals in the final 15 minutes, including two from Gurello and Rodriguez' fourth marker of the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Eight different Knights finished with a goal in the win with 14 different players recording at least one point.
  • Rodriguez led the way with five points, adding an assist to his four markers.
  • Gurello potted four goals and collected four groundballs.
  • Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied twice, including the game winner.
  • Esposito finished off a four-point night with a goal and three helpers. He added five groundballs in the victory.
  • Martin scored his team leading 19th goal of the season and added an assist to go along with three groundballs.
  • Brian Schneider (Hicksville, N.Y.) assisted on a pair of goals.
  • Bobby DeSantis (Patchogue, N.Y.) went 6-for-6 in face-offs and picked up six groundballs.
  • Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) collected four groundballs and caused two turnovers to go along with a goal.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) caused three turnovers and picked up two groundballs.
  • Dennis Dowd (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) won eight face-offs.
  • Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) earned the win in goal with eight saves and five groundballs.
 
For The Mariners
  • John Porcelli scored twice for Mitchell.
  • Ethan LePain finished with a pair of assists.
  • Desmond Knowles won four face-offs, earned 11 groundballs and caused two turnovers.
  • Steven Turchetta made 18 saves for the Mariners in goal.
