Knights Drop Double Overtime Heartbreaker At Manhattanville

Gurello scores at horn to force overtime

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end following a hard fought 9-8 double overtime road loss at Manhattanville Wednesday night. Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) scored at the fourth quarter horn to force overtime and Brian Schneider (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with four points.
 
Wednesday's contest marked the second straight meeting between the Knights and Valiants that went to two extra frames. The loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 8-4 overall on the season and 2-2 in league play, while the Valiants move to 3-9 and 2-2 in conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the only two goals of the first stanza to open a 2-0 advantage through 15 minutes of play.
  • Schneider finished off a feed from Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) just over four minutes into the game before Esposito scored a goal of his own off a pass from Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) with 19 seconds left in the frame to build the two-goal cushion.
  • Manhattanville countered with the only two tallies of the second frame to send the two teams into the intermission deadlocked at 2-2.
  • Sean Larkin got Manhattanville on the board at the 5:26 mark of the second stanza before Jesse McGrath knotted the game at 2-2 in the final minute of the period.
  • Manhattanville pushed its scoring run to four goals coming out of halftime with the first two tallies of the third quarter.
  • McGrath scored both goals inside the first five minutes of the frame to give the Valiants their first advantage of the night.
  • Gurello scored with 4:03 left in the third to give the Mount its first goal since the closing seconds of the first quarter to bring the Mount to within 4-3.
  • McGrath scored his third of the quarter with 3:09 left before Schneider tallied his second of the game to get the Knights to within 5-4 with 15 minutes left to play.
  • Schneider finished off his hat trick to open the scoring in the fourth and give the Mount its only lead of the second half.
  • Manhattanville answered with the next three goals to push its advantage out to 8-6 with 6:30 left in regulation time.
  • Mount Saint Mary got a Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) goal off a scramble in front of the goal with 4:44 left to cut the disadvantage to 8-7.
  • Coming out of a timeout with five seconds left in regulation, Gurello found the back of the net to send the two sides into overtime.
  • Neither team would score in the first extra frame with Mount Saint Mary outshooting the Valiants 3-2.
  • Following a save from Jason Frezza off a Matthew Esposito (Manorville, N.Y.) shot with 2:32 left in overtime, Manhattanville got the game winner from Nick Cornelia with 1:35 left in the second overtime period.
 
For The Knights
  • Schneider finished the night with four points on the strength of three goals and an assist.
  • Gurello scored twice and added a groundball and a caused turnover.
  • Esposito posted a goal and an assist and moved to within eight points of 100 in his career. He picked up three groundballs and caused a turnover in the contest.
  • Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored a goal and collected four groundballs.
  • Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Martin each finished with an assist.
  • Robert Root (Scotch Plains, N.J.) won 10 face-offs and collected two groundballs.
  • M. Esposito and Maggio each caused three turnovers for the Knights. Esposito led the team with five groundballs with Maggio adding a goal and four groundballs.
  • Sean Mueller (Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished tied for the team lead with five groundballs.
  • Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) stopped 10 shots for the Knights and picked up a groundball.
 
For The Valiants
  • McGrath closed the night with five goals and two assists, adding six groundballs.
  • Cornelia potted the game winner and assisted on two goals.
  • Dillon Sanzari scored twice.
  • Harrison Yoguez assisted on two goals.
  • Nick Padovani won 10 face-offs.
  • Kevin Rafferty and Nolan Nye each caused two turnovers and picked up four groundballs.
  • Frezza turned aside 12 shots in the win.
 
Game Statistics
  • Manhattanville finished with a slim 32-31 advantage in shots, while the Knights held a 20-19 edge in shots on goal.
  • Groundballs were even at 40-40 in the game.
  • Both teams won 10 face-offs.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished 18-for-25 in clearing chances.
