Men’s Lacrosse Edged By USMMA On Senior Day

Kelley makes 14 saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team dropped a hard fought 10-7 decision to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. A trio of Knights finished the contest with three points, while Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) made 14 saves in goal.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 8-5 overall on the season and to 2-3 in Skyline Conference play, while USMMA improves to 7-6 and 4-1 in conference competition.
 
How It Happened
  • The first quarter featured just three tallies, with USMMA taking a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Jack Collins scored 1:09 into the contest to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead and tallied again with 95 seconds left in the opening period to break a 1-1 tie.
  • Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) potted his 23rd goal of the season at the 11:36 mark of the first quarter to tie the score at 1-1.
  • After just three goals in the first 15 minutes, the two teams erupted for nine goals in the second stanza.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored three straight goals early in the frame, including two with the man-advantage, to take its first lead of the game.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a man-up goal at the 10:38 mark of the second quarter to tie the score at 3-3 before Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) buried a man-up goal 48 seconds late to push the Mount in front 4-3.
  • The Mariners responded with back-to-back goals to move back in front 5-4.
  •  Mount Saint Mary answered again with markers from Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Rodriguez to retake a 6-5 lead with 3:38 left before halftime.
  • The Knights maintained the advantage until just five seconds remained in the second period when Carter Hall potted his 26th goal of the season to send the two teams to the intermission deadlocked at 6-6.
  • The second half was tightly contested and featured just five goals with the Mariners scoring two goals in each of the third and fourth periods.
  • USMMA scored both of its third period goals inside the first five minutes of the frame to open an 8-6 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored its only second half goal at the 2:11 mark of the third when Sean Mueller (Pleasantville, N.Y.) brought the Mount to within 8-7 with his ninth marker of the season.
  • USMMA scored the only two goals of the final stanza when Liam Pickett scored with 9:30 left to play and Sam Winkler closed out the scoring with 5:35 remaining in the tilt.
 
For The Knights
  • Rodriguez led the Mount with two goals and was one of three players to register three points.
  • Esposito scored once and assisted on a pair of goals, moving to within five points of 100 in his career.
  • Martin rounded out the day with a goal and a pair of assists.
  • Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led the team with five groundballs.
  • Carmine Comitini (Staten island, N.Y.) caused a pair of turnovers and picked up three groundballs.
  • Sean Nertney (Lynbrook, N.Y.) collected four groundballs.
  • Robert Root (Scotch Plains, N.J.) won seven face-offs for the Mount.
  • Kelley closed out a strong day in goal with a season-high 14 saves. He added four groundballs on the day for the Mount.
 
For The Mariners
  • Winkler scored three goals and was one of three Mariners with four points in the game.
  • Collins scored twice and assisted on a pair goals.
  • Matt Groom finished with a marker and three helpers.
  • Dom Mirack led all players with 10 groundballs.
  • Chris Neuman went 11-for-20 in face-offs and collected four groundballs.
  • Samuel Stephenson picked up the win in goal with 10 stops.
 
Game Statistics
  • USMMA finished with a 43-25 advantage in shots.
  • Groundballs went the way of the Mariners 47-33.
  • The Marines held a slim edge in face-offs at 11-9.
  • Mount Saint scored three goals with the man-advantage.
