Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Farmingdale State In Skyline Opener

Rodriguez scores twice for Knights

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened Skyline Conference play on Saturday against Farmingdale State, falling to the Rams by a score of 15-5. Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) potted a pair of goals to lead the Knights' offense.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-3 overall on the season and to 0-1 in conference play, while Farmingdale State improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first 30 minutes saw the visitors take a slim 4-2 advantage into the intermission.
  • Farmingdale State scored the first three goals of the contest, including two tallies from Terrence Haggarty in the opening three minutes.
  • After falling behind by three goals, the Mount outscored the Rams 2-1 in the second stanza and climbed to within 3-2.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored his eighth goal of the season at the 5:18 mark of the second stanza before Rodriguez found the back of the net for the first time with 2:36 left before halftime to bring the Mount to within a goal.
  • Johnny McMahon answered with the first of six man-up goals for the Rams on the day with 61 seconds left in the first half to send the Rams to the break with the two-goal advantage.
  • The Farmingdale State offense spread its lead to 10-3 after outscoring the Mount 6-1 in the third frame.
  • The Rams got a pair of man-up goals from Hunter Lyons in the third with Brian Schneider (Hicksville, N.Y.) scoring his third goal of the season with just under 10 minutes left in the quarter.
  • The visitors scored the first five goals of the final stanza, getting man-up goals from Thomas Stock and Jake Wandle to open a 15-3 lead.
  • The Knights scored the final two goals of the contest, with Rodriguez scoring his second of the game with 3:52 left to play and Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) scoring his third of the season with 1:33 left to go.
 
For The Knights
  • Rodriguez scored his third and fourth goals of the season for the Mount and added two groundballs.
  • Esposito scored once and picked up his team leading 19th assist of the season to close out a two-point afternoon.
  • Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.), Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) all collected three groundballs with Maggio causing a pair of turnovers.
  • Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) finished the day with eight saves in goal and with a team-high four groundballs.
 
For The Rams
  • Haggerty, the conference leader in goals and points, finished the day with four goals and four assists to go along with four groundballs.
  • Wandle finished with seven points, scoring four times and assisting on three goals.
  • Rob Varello, Stock and Lyons all scored twice with Varello adding two assists.
  • Gino Luchetti finished with two caused turnovers and a groundball.
  • Antonio Kaminskey went 18-for-21 in face-offs and led all players with 12 groundballs.
  • Kevin Loonie started and was one of four goalies to see time for the Rams, earning the win with seven saves.
