Baseball Splits Twinbill With New Paltz

Barone drives in three-runs in game won win

Fishkill, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team split a doubleheader with New Paltz Saturday afternoon, picking up its first win of the season in an 8-6 game one victory before dropping the backend of the set 7-3. Luke Barone (Monroe, N.Y.) drove in a trio of runs in the game one victory.
 
With the split on Saturday, Mount Saint Mary moves to 1-4 overall on the season, while New Paltz stands at 3-5.
 
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 8 – New Paltz 6
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary plated four runs over its first two at-bats t open a 4-2 lead.
  • Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.) singled in the game's first run before Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled home a run for an early 2-0 lead.
  • After the hawks knotted the score 2-2, Barone tripled home Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) to regain the lead before Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) delivered Barone with a double to open a two-run advantage.
  • The two sides would match each other with a single run apiece in the fourth and three runs each in the fifth.
  • Nolasco walked in a run in the fifth before Barone singled home a pair of runs to give the Knights the final 8-6 advantage.
 
For The Knights
  • Barone finished the opener 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
  • Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) each scored twice.
  • Nolasco finished with a hit, two runs and an RBI.
  • Nick Bianchi (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up his first career win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
  • Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) notched the save, striking out one in a scoreless inning of work.
 
Game 2: New Paltz 7 – Mount Saint Mary 3
How It Happened
  • New Paltz broke a scoreless tie with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Mount Saint Mary battled back to knot the score with two runs in the home half of the sixth inning.
  • Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) got the Knights on the board with a triple in the sixth.
  • Franco delivered Goodwin with a sacrifice fly to even the score at 2-2.
  • The Hawks erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for the victory. Justin Ortiz had the big blow with a two-run single in the inning.
  • Mount Saint Mary got a run closer on a Ryan Lutinski (Easton, Conn.) run scoring single in the seventh, but could not pull any closer than the final four-run final.
 
For The Knights
  • Nolasco and Goodwin were two of four different players with a hit in game two with each tripling.
  • Nolasco, Goodwin and Cullen Roper (Stratford, Conn.) scored the run for the Knights.
  • Liam Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) worked 4.0 string innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out three.

  • Mount Saint Mary heads to Bard on Sunday.
  • New Paltz travels to Centenary next Saturday.
