Mount Saint Mary Outlasts New Paltz In Overtime

Gurello tallies game winner for the Knights

Newburgh, N.Y. – Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) scored four goals, including the game winner in overtime, as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team scored its third straight victory to open the season with a hard fought 10-9 triumph over visiting New Paltz Thursday afternoon.
 
Thursday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to a perfect 3-0 to open the 2022 season while New Paltz falls to 0-3 to open the campaign.
 
How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary found itself trailing 4-1 late in the first period. Gurello scored his first of the after the Hawks opened with the first two goals of the game and Sean Mueller (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored late in the opening stanza to bring the Mount to within 4-2 after 15 minutes.
  • After trading the first two goals of the second period, the Mount got goals from Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) and Gurello to knot the score at 5-5 with 4:14 left before halftime.
  • New Paltz answered with a James Flanagan tally with 60 seconds left in the second period to carry a slim 6-5 advantage into the intermission.
  • Flanagan scored a man-up goal in the first minute of the third period and Elias Elcock added a goal with 11:32 left in the frame to push the visitors in front 8-5, matching their largest lead of the contest.
  • Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) brought the Mount to within two goals with 6:49 left in the third period and started a four-goal run for the Mount.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the third with his second of the season, cutting the Mount's disadvantage to 8-7 with 15 minutes left to play.
  • Martin scored back-to-back goals in the fourth, including a man-up goal, that gave the Knights their first lead of the game, at 9-8, with 10:42 left in regulation.
  • John Reese answered with a man-up tally for New Paltz with 6:58 left to even the score at 9-9 and close out the scoring in regulation time.
  • New Paltz would have five attempts at the cage in the final half minute, but would not be able to put a shot on target.
  • After Robert Root (Scotch Plains, N.J.) won the overtime face-off, Gurello buried the game winner in the top right-hand corner, just over a minute in, to keep the Mount unbeaten to start the season.
For The Knights
  • Gurello led the scoring attack with four goals, chipping in four groundballs.
  • Martin posted his third straight hat trick to begin the year and pushed his team lead in goals to 10. He finished off the win with an assist, three groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Green Wright scored for the second straight game and added an assist.
  • Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) assisted on three goals, moving his team lead in the category to seven.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) caused three turnovers for the Mount and picked up a pair of groundballs.
  • Root won eight face-offs and joined Gurello with four groundballs.
  • Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) played a strong game in goal for the Knights, stopping 13 shots and securing three groundballs.
 
For The Hawks
  • Flanagan closed out a big game with four goals and a pair of assists.
  • Reese scored two goals and assisted on another to go along with four groundballs.
  • Tim Russell caused two turnovers and scooped three groundballs.
  • Ethan Scully won 12 face-offs and picked up four groundballs.
  • Nate Lindsey made the start in goal and stopped four shots in the first half.
  • Ryan Steinhart made eight saves after halftime for the Hawks.
