Knights, Mariners Square-Off In Skyline Conference Showdown

Top two teams in conference standings meet Wednesday in Newburgh

Newburgh, N.Y. – Winners of four straight contests, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team will meet the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the team directly behind it in the league standings, Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Center. At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary is coming off an impressive 81-34 home win over Farmingdale State on Monday and opens play on Wednesday at 16-3 overall, including 8-0 at home, and 14-1 against Skyline Conference opponents.
 
Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) and Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) are both scoring in double-figures for the Knights entering Wednesday's contest with Bojka leading the way with just under 18 points per night. She converts at 43.9-percent from the floor overall and is good for 8.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and just over two steals per outing for the Knights.
 
Smith pours in nearly 13 points per game for the Mount on 49.2-percent shooting overall and a 40.7-percent mark from three-point range. Smith leads the team in assists with better than three per game and chips in 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest.
 
Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) has recorded a double-double in each of the Mount's last two contests and paces the Mount on the glass with 9.9 caroms per night, including better than three offensive boards per outing. She chips in 8.0 points, 2.0 assists and nearly two steals per contest.
 
Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) supports the offense with an even 8.4 points per game while Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) is the team's top threat from behind the arc with a team-high 33 three-point field goals.
 
Mount Saint Mary is second in the Skyline Conference in scoring with 75.6 points per game and is outscoring opponents by better than 17 points per game. The Knights shoot 39-percent from the floor overall, 30.8-percent from three-point range and 63.8-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Scouting The Mariners: USMMA comes calling on Wednesday winners of 10 of its last 11 outings and with an 18-4 overall record and a 14-3 mark against league rivals. The Mariners have played two more conference games than the Knights and sit just a game behind the Mount in the league standings.
 
Grace Jackson leads the way for USMMA with 19.5 points per game, the lone Mariner to average in double-figures. Jackson is shooting better than 40-percent from the floor and packs the stat sheet with 10.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.7 steals and better than a block per outing.
 
Three Mariners score at least eight points per game, including Madison Demos who is good for 8.6 points and a team-high 10.7 rebounds per game. Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings scores 8.3 points per night for USMMA and collects better than six rebounds per game, while Madison Reddick contributes 8.0 points and 6.6 caroms per night.
 
USMMA scores just 61.1 points per game, but leads the conference in defense, allowing just over 50 points to its opponents. The Mariners convert at 34.9-percent overall, 24.1-percent from bonus distance and 69.9-percent from the free-throw line.
 
Previous Meeting: The two sides met in Kings Point, N.Y. on December 16 with the Mount coming away with a 57-44 victory. The Knights limited the Mariners to 26.3-percent shooting overall and a 2-for-9 effort from three-point range. Demos led USMMA with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Smith finished with a team-high 13 points and five assists for the Knights.
 
Recent History: Mount Saint Mary has won the last three head-to-head meetings with the Mariners and is 10-1 in the series since the start of the 2016-17 season. The lone loss for the Mount came in a 44-39 defeat in the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship Final.
 
What's Next: Mount Saint Mary closes out a four-game home stand on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to Sarah Lawrence.
