Mount Saint Mary Outlasts Purchase, 62-59

Yearwood nets game-high 21 points

Newburgh, N.Y. – Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led three Knights in double-figures with a game-high 21 points as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team stopped a seven-game slide on Monday night with a hard fought 62-59 victory at the Kaplan Center.
 
Monday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 6-13 overall on the season and to 4-7 in Skyline Conference play, while Purchase drops to 4-15 on the season and 4-8 in league competition.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary got out to a quick 10-3 advantage following triples from Yearwood and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) around a jumper from Mike Dedda (West Chester, Pa.) in the opening 3:03 of the contest.
  • The Knights' lead grew to double-figures when a pair of Yearwood free-throws moved the Mount in front 23-13 with 8:01 left before halftime.
  • The Mount used a Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) lay-in at the 7:13 mark of the first half to surge in front by a game-high 12 points at 25-13.
  • Following the Sienke conversion, Purchase answered with a 13-5 stretch to close the half and pull to within 30-26 at the intermission.
  • Purchase went 3-for-5 from three-point range over the run and held the Mount to 2-for-12 shooting over the seven minute stretch.
  • A Jordan Knochen three-pointer trimmed the Mount's lead to 27-24 before the Mount got a three-point play from Figueroa with 1:17 left before halftime.
  • Mount Saint Mary converted at 33.3-percent in the opening 20 minutes and hit in four three-pointers before halftime.
  • Purchase shot 27.6-percent with five of its eight field goals coming from behind the arc.
  • Yearwood and Figueroa led the team at the break with eight points apiece.
  • Knochen led the Panthers with seven tallies at the intermission.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary built its lead back up to 34-27 on an early Yearwood lay-in in the second half.
  • Purchase answered with a 10-2 run capped by a Malcolm Hansford-Whyte three-point play to take its first lead of the game at 37-36 with 15:52 left in regulation time.
  • Mount Saint Mary regained the advantage and pulled in front 40-37 on four straight free-throws from Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.).
  • The Knights spread the lead to 46-41 on a Yearwood triple with 8:57 left in the second half.
  • After a pair of Sienke free-throws gave the Knights a 50-45 lead, Purchase got a pair Terrence Mason buckets and a triple from Justin Mason to pull in front 52-50 with 5:24 showing on the second half clock.
  • Mount Saint Mary answered quickly with a Yearwood jumper to knot the score at 52-52, but Elijah Holmes countered with a jumper for the Panthers to give them the slim lead back.
  • J.P. Egan (Lansdale, Pa.) converted a layup to tie the score at 54-54 before Figueroa buried a three-pointer to give the Knights a 57-54 advantage with 2:30 left to play.
  • The back-and-forth continued when Hansford-Whyte sunk a triple to even the score again at 57-57.
  • Mount Saint Mary was finally able to pull in front for good when Figueroa hit on a pair of free-throws to give the Knights at 59-57 edge with 1:41 left to play.
  • Including the Figueroa conversions, the Knights made five of six free-throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
  • Purchase had an attempt to tie trailing 61-59 with three seconds to go, but could not convert and could not get shot off at the horn trailing by the final three-point decision.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 36.4-percent overall after halftime and outscored the Panthers 14-3 in the second half from the free-throw line.
  • Purchase converted at just over 39-percent in the second half and went 4-for-10 from three-point range.
  • Yearwood led the Knights with 13 second half points.
  • Justin Mason led all players with 15 points after the break for the Panthers.
 
For The Knights
  • Yearwood scored at least 20 points in a game for the seventh time this season after going 7-for-17 from the floor with three triples. He added four rebounds and an assist to the winning effort.
  • Figueroa contributed 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, going 4-for-9 from the floor with two three-pointers.
  • Cyran chipped in 10 points on the strength of 5-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line to go along with five rebounds.
  • Egan hauled in seven rebounds and totaled five points off the bench.
  • Sienke led the team with three assists and chipped in five points, four rebounds and a blocked shot.
 
For The Panthers
  • Justin Mason led Purchase with 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Hansford-Whyte posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, adding a game-high six assists.
  • Holmes and Knochen each contributed nine points.
  • Terrence Mason narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine caroms.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the contest shooting 34.5-percent overall, including 6-for-15 shooting from three-point range.
  • Purchase shot 33.9-percent overall and went 9-for-26 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 85.7-percent from the free-throw line and outscored the Panthers 18-8 from the charity stripe.
