Yearwood Nets Career-High In Tight Loss To Sarah Lawrence

Yearwood pours in 26 points for the Knights

Newburgh, N.Y. – Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 26 points and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) posted a double-double, but the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team suffered a key 67-62 home loss to Sarah Lawrence Wednesday night.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-14 overall on the season and to 4-8 in Skyline Conference play. Sarah Lawrence sweeps the season series with the Knights and improves to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in league play.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary opened the game with a with a Figueroa lay-in and a three-pointer from Yearwood to build a quick 5-0 lead.
  • Following the Yearwood bucket, the Knights went nearly six minutes before a Miles Calame (Staten Island, N.Y.) conversion with 12:32 left in the opening half.
  • Sarah Lawrence took advantage of the drought with 10 straight points to move in front 10-5 on a Lucas Murray bucket at the 14:46 mark of the half.
  • Sarah Lawrence maintained the advantage until a Yearwood jumper capped a 6-0 stretch to tie the score at 18-18.
  • The Gryphons answered with the next four points before a pair of Yearwood free throws and a Calame three-pointer pushed the Knights in front 23-22 with 3:40 left before halftime.
  • Sarah Lawrence responded with the final nine points of the half to carry a 31-23 advantage into the break.
  • Xiyuan Zhang started the run with a three-pointer before Liam Barry scored the final four points of the period in the final 62 seconds.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot just 30.8-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and went 2-for-12 from three-point range.
  • Sarah Lawrence converted at 40.6-percent with a 2-for-7 effort from three-point range.
  • Yearwood led the Mount with 12 points at the break.
  • Jayden Figueroa entered the intermission with five points, four rebounds and four blocked shots.
  • Barry led all players at halftime with 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
Second Half
  • Sarah Lawrence spread its lead to double-figures early in the second half when Zhang hit a jumper to push the visitors in front 33-23.
  • The lead grew to a game-high 12 points twice in the early going of the second half when Murray and Justin Bailey converted buckets to give the Gryphons leads of 35-23 and 37-25.
  • Mount Saint Mary climbed to within 39-35 with 15:28 left on a Yearwood three-pointer.
  • Sarah Lawrence spread its lead back to nine points at the 11:56 mark before two triples from Yearwood around a Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) lay-in cut the deficit to 51-46.
  • Yearwood buried another three-pointer at the 8:43 mark to slice the disadvantage to 51-49, but the Knights would not be able to pull even.
  • Mount Saint Mary pulled to within a single point twice in the final 8:09, but saw the Gryphons get conversions from Barry and Joshua Capellan to build its lead back to 61-54 with 4:38 left.
  • The Knights pulled back to within two late in the half, but the Gryphons hit three of their final four free-throws to close out the win.
  • Mount Saint Mary improved to 43.2-percent shooting in the second half and hit on five three-pointers.
  • Sarah Lawrence shot an identical 40.6-percent after halftime and outscored the Knights by eight from the free-throw line.
  • Yearwood scored 14 second half points on the strength of four three-pointers.
  • Barry scored 18 points after the break, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.
 
For The Knights
  • Yearwood scored better than 20 points for the second straight game and for the eighth time this season. He finished the night 9-for-20 from the floor with five triples as he topped his previous career mark of 23.
  • Figueroa totaled 14 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. He went 6-for-14 from the floor, adding two assists and a career-high five blocked shots.
  • Cyran chipped in nine points and three rebounds.
  • Mike Dedda (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Mount with four assists.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Barry led all players with 31 points, going 11-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. He closed a double-double with 13 rebounds and totaled three assists and four steals.
  • Lucas Murray notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Justin Bailey contributed 11 points and collected a game-high 14 caroms.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 38.1-percent from the floor overall and went 7-for-27 from three-point range.
  • Sarah Lawrence converted at 40.6-percent despite a 2-for-15 showing from three-point range.
  • The Gryphons went just 13-for-27 from the free-throw line, but outscored the Mount by six from the stripe.
  • Sarah Lawrence finished with a commanding 23-12 advantage on the offensive glass leading to a 17-4 edge in second chance points.
  • The Gryphons outscored the Mount in the paint 40-28.
