Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season With Victory At Alvernia

Mueller record four points in win

Reading, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with an impressive 13-3 road victory at Alvernia Saturday afternoon. Sean Mueller (Pleasantville, N.Y.) lead the Mount Saint Mary offensive attack with four points.
 
Mount Saint Mary opens the season with a victory to move to 1-0, while Alvernia falls to 0-2 in the early going of the 2022 campaign.
 
How It Happened
  • After allowing the first goal of the game, Mount Saint Mary ripped off the next seven tallies of the first half to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.
  • Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.) evened the score at 1-1 at the 8:29 mark of the first period with his first tally of the season.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.), Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Mueller followed with first quarter markers as the Knights took a 4-1 advantage into the second stanza.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the only three goals of the second frame to carry a six-goal edge into the intermission.
  • Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) opened the second period scoring at the 5:09 mark for the Mount with Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) following with a man-up tally at 3:11 to give the Knights a 6-1 edge.
  • Ryan Olmstead (Millbrook, N.Y.) closed out the first half scoring for the Mount off a feed from Mueller with 2:37 left before halftime to give the Knights a 7-1 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary extended it scoring run to eight goals to open the third period scoring when Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) buried a feed from Olmstead to give the Knights a seven-goal cushion.
  • After Alvernia scored for the first time since the 12:37 mark of the first quarter, Martin converted another feed from Olmstead to send the Knights to the fourth quarter with a 9-2 edge.
  • Mount Saint Mary went on to outscore Alvernia 4-1 in the fourth, including a pair of goals from Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.).
  • Martin potted his third of the game with 3:10 left in the contest to give the Knights the final 13-3 advantage.
For The Knights
  • Mueller closed the victory with a pair of goals and two assists, adding a groundball.
  • Martin led three Knights with at least two goals with a hat trick on Saturday, adding a groundball.
  • Gurello finished with two tallies and a pair of groundballs.
  • Olstead scored once and assisted on a pair of markers, leading the team with five groundballs.
  • Travers posted a goal and an assist for the Knights.
  • Esposito rounded out the game with a goal, two assists and four groundballs.
  • Robert Root (Scotch Plains, N.Y.) went 10-for-13 in face-offs with four groundballs.
  • Esposito and Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.Y.) led the team with two caused turnovers apiece.
  • Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) earned the win in goal with six saves and three groundballs.
  • Kevin Leonard (Stony Brook, N.Y.) played the fourth quarter in goal and stopped a pair of shots.

  • Cade Campbell scored twice and collected two groundballs.
  • Keith Lake finished with a goal and an assist.
  • Ryan Gilman won four face-offs.
