Baseball Topped By New Paltz

Barnes goes 3-for-3 in loss

St. Mary's City, Md.  – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team finished off the opening weekend of the 2022 season on Sunday morning with a 7-3 loss to New Paltz. Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.) finished the contest 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Knights.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-3 on the young season, while New Paltz improved to 2-0 with both wins to date coming over the Knights.
 
How It Happened
  • Each team scored a run in their first at-bat, before New Paltz moved in front 4-1 with a three-run second inning. The Hawks scored two runs on wild pitches in the second and got a run scoring single from Justin Ortiz to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary got a run closer in the home half of the third when Barnes doubled home Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) with one out in the inning.
  • The Hawks answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead out to 6-2. The Hawks took advantage of three Mount Saint Mary errors in the frame before getting a run scoring base hit from Dean Stalzer.
  • Mount Saint Mary plated its third run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joseph Laudati (Walden, N.Y.) and Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) set up the inning with a single and a walk before Barnes drove in his third run of the game with a two-out single.
  • New Paltz closed out the scoring in the game with a single run in the top of the eighth when Tommy Kreider delivered the game's final tally with a sacrifice fly.
 
For The Knights
  • Barnes finished the contest 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a trio of RBI. Through the first three games of the season, Barnes is hitting .625 with a pair of doubles and a team-high four runs driven in.
  • Franco closed the day 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
  • Marzigliano and Laudati each finished with a hit and run with Marzigliano adding a walk.
  • Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) recorded one of the team's four doubles in the game.
  • Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) suffered the loss in his first start of the season, working 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and one walk.
  • John Morehead (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) each worked a scoreless inning in relief with Morehead recording the team's only strikeout on the day.
 
For The Hawks
  • Ortiz closed out the victory 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in.
  • Matt Laurelli recorded two hits and scored a pair of runs.
  • After driving in eight runs on Saturday against the Knights, Stalzer closed Sunday's contest with a hit and two RBI.
  • James Trink earned the win with 4.0 innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary will host Sage on February 26 in a doubleheader set to be played at Dutchess Stadium.
  • New Paltz takes on St. Mary's-Maryland Sunday afternoon.
