Women’s Basketball Falls To St. Joseph’s-L.I. In OT Thriller

Guglielmo, E. Smith net 10 points apiece

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team took their first conference loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 72-66 in overtime on the road against St. Joseph's L.I. Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with 10 points in the loss. 

Saturday's loss drops the Knights to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 against Skyline opponents.  

First Half 

  • The first quarter saw the Knights build a five-point lead. 
  • The Knights trailed 8-5 at the 6:22 mark following a Golden Eagles score by Catherine Siounis, but knotted things up at 8-8 following a triple by E. Smith. 
  • Layups by Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) gave the Mount a 21-16 advantage entering the second quarter. 
  • The second quarter was closely contested, with the Mount outscoring St. Joe's by one point. 
  • The Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take a 24-23 lead at the 7:24 mark of the second period. 
  • The Knights then went on an 8-0 swing of their own, capped off by a Marissa Campbell (Franklin, N.Y.) layup to give the Mount a 31-24 edge with 4:08 remaining in the quarter. 
  • Lanyah Ford sunk a free throw with 17 seconds left to send the game into intermission, with the Mount leading 34-28. 
  • The Knights shot 13-of-37 in the opening half, including just 1-of-13 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Golden Eagles shot 11-for-31 in the first half and 3-for-10 from three. 

Second Half 

  • The second half started slow, with an Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) layup at the 8:22 mark being the lone points through the first 2:23 of the second half. 
  • Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) then knocked down a triple and a jumper from E.Smith  pushed the Knights margin to 11 with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter. 
  • Ford hit a layup at the 5:36 mark to cap off a 6-0 Golden Eagles run to shrink the Knights lead to 41-36. 
  • An Alyssa Adomaites triple at the 3:06 mark of the third period erased the Knights lead completely, giving St. Joe's a 44-43 advantage. 
  • The two sides traded buckets down the stretch, and the Mount owned a 49-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. 
  • Adomaites knocked down a three seven seconds into the final period to put the Golden Eagles back in front 51-49. 
  • E. Smith hit a layup at the 6:20 mark of the final period to vault the Knights back in front 57-56. 
  • Rivera drilled a triple with 1:44 remaining to give the Mount a 63-59 edge, but layups by Ford and Adomaites knotted things up at 63-63 with 1:05 left to play. 
  • Julianna Knice knocked down a free throw for St. Joe's with 35 seconds left to put them back in front 64-63, but Guglielmo made one of her own to tie it once more at 64-64, and that's how it went into overtime. 
  • The five-minute overtime period saw the Knights hold a one-point lead for 2:55 following a free throw make by Guglielmo. 
  • Ford then made a free throw of her own to tie the game at 65 apiece. 
  • The Mount took the lead once again when Phelan knocked down a free throw at the 1:22 mark, but Ford made a layup which was followed by a triple by Isabella Sierra with 36 seconds left to put St. Joe's in front 70-66. 
  • The Knights couldn't get anything to fall the rest of the way and a pair of free throws from Ford with 11 seconds remaining sealed it at 72-66. 

For The Knights 

  • E. Smith finished with 10points and six rebounds. 
  • Guglielmo was second on the team in points with 10 to go along with four boards. 
  • Charlotte Twohig stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, four rebounds, and four steals. 
  • K.Smith led the team with three assists and contributed nine points. 
  • Phelan pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. 

For The Golden Eagles 

  • Ford had a 20-point, 20 rebound game, while adding four assists. 
  • Siounis posted a double-double of her own, providing 10 points, 14 boards, four assists and three steals. 
  • Knice chipped in nine points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. 
  • Adomaites drilled three triples on five attempts. 

Game Statistics 

  • Mount Saint Mary shot 29.3-percent from the field in the contest, and just 10.0-percent from beyond the arc. 
  • St. Joseph's shot 28-of-69 from the field, and 8-of-22 from three. 
  • The Knights shot 53.6-percent from the line, while the Golden Eagles shot 44.4-percent. 
  • St. Joe's grabbed 60 rebounds to the Mount's 49. 
  • The Mount scored 38 points in the paint compared to 30 for St. Joe's. 

What's Next 

  • The Knights will return home to host Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday night at 6 p.m. 
  • The Golden Eagles will travel to Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday night.
