Knights Down Dolphins Behind Twohig’s Career Night

Junior guard scores 14 in win

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team hosted Mount Saint Vincent Thursday night and beat the Dolphins 69-52. Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.) netted a career-high 14 points to help guide the Mount to the victory. 

Thursday's win moves the Mount to 5-3 overall on the season and 3-1 in league action, while the Dolphins fall 3-5 on the campaign and 0-5 against Skyline opponents. 

First Half 

  • The Knights quickly built a 7-0 lead, capped off by an Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) triple off a feed from Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) at the 7:21 mark of the opening frame. 
  • The Dolphins fought back, evening the score at 12-12 on a three from Kira Villegas with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • The two sides traded the lead from there, and a pair of Twohig free throws ended the first period with the Dolphins holding an 18-16 lead. 
  • The Knights opened the second period by going on a 10-0 run, which included two free throws as well as a triple from Twohig and was culminated by a K. Smith jumper with 4:51 remaining in the quarter to push the Mount Saint Mary lead to 26-18. 
  • Twohig and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) both hit threes to push the Knights margin to 32-22 with 2:37 left in the half. 
  • Cailean Nolan (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) sunk a transition layup to end the half, giving the Knights a 37-22 lead entering the break. 
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the Dolphins 21-4 in the second period. 
  • The Knights shot 13-of-30 in the opening half, including 5-of-14 from deep. 
  • The Dolphins shot 32.1-percent from the field in the first half and shot 20-percent on triples. 

Second Half 

  • Mount Saint Vincent scored the first four points of the third period to cut its deficit to single digits, 37-28. 
  • Amber Been sunk one from beyond the arc at the 3:26 mark of the third stanza to slash the Knights lead to 42-37. 
  • Desrats knocked down a jumper to get the Knights lead back to seven, but Bean hit another three with 59 seconds left to get the deficit down to 44-40. 
  • The Mount took a 47-40 advantage into the final period. 
  • The fourth quarter began with a Twohig and-one at the 8:40 mark to give the Mount a 50-40 edge. 
  • An Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) triple and a pair of K. Smith free throws with 3:34 left in the game grew the Knights lead to 61-45. 
  • The Knights steady shooting continued, as they shot 11-for-26 from the field and 4-for-13 from three after halftime. 
  • The Dolphins shooting improved in the second half, as they shot 10-of-27 from the field and 3-of-6 from deep. 

For The Knights 

  • Aside from Twohig's career-high 14 points, she provided six rebounds, four assists, and five steals. 
  • Desrats was the Knights leading scorer, as she notched 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting, while chipping in three rebounds and two steals. 
  • K. Smith added nine points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. 
  • Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. 

For The Dolphins 

  • Been posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards, along with seven assists and five steals. 
  • Villegas provided 15 points and five rebounds for Mount Saint Vincent. 
  • Melanieann Broderick posted eight points and nine rebounds. 

Game Statistics 

  • Mount Saint Mary shot 42.9-percent as a team, and 33.3-percent from beyond the arc. Mount Saint Vincent shot 19-of-55 from the field, and 4-of-11 from deep. 
  • Points in the paint were knotted at 28 apiece. 
  • The Knights got 25 points from their bench while the Dolphins got just seven. 
  • The Mount had 16 points on the fastbreak and the Dolphins only had six. 

What's Next 

  • The Mount hosts The City College of New York on Saturday at 1 p.m. 
  • Mount Saint Vincent will head back home to host Five Towns on December 13.
