Knights Downed At Union

Desrats, Twohig score in double-figures

Schenectady, N.Y. – In its first action since November 19, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday evening following a 53-44 road loss at Union. Charlotte Twohig (Syosset, N.Y.) led two players in double-figures with 12 points.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-2 overall on the season, while Union evens its overall record at 2-2.
 
First Half
  • Both teams struggled to score in the opening stanza with the Knights going just 1-for-18 from the floor over the first 10 minutes.
  • A Twohig jumper at the 7:34 mark of the period accounted for the Mount's only bucket of the opening period, knotting the score at 2-2.
  • Union went on to score the final seven points of the first quarter, including a three-pointer from Emma Riley with 95 seconds left in the frame to give the Dutchwomen a 9-2 edge heading into the second stanza.
  • Union would build a lead as large as eight points twice in the second stanza on Sunday.
  • Following a Maura Conan jumper that gave the Dutchwomen a 13-5 lead, the Knights ran off seven straight points to slice the deficit to 13-12 on a pair of Brianna Guglielmo (Smithtown, N.Y.) free-throws with 3:09 left before halftime.
  • Union responded with the next four points and used two Jelena Perovic free-throws in the closing seconds of the quarter to build a 19-13 advantage through 20 minutes.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the first half just 4-for-32 from the floor overall and 1-for-14 from three-point range.
  • Union was limited to 8-for-26 shooting overall and a 1-for-4 effort from behind the arc.
 
Second Half
  • Union opened the second half on an 8-2 to run build a 27-15 lead on a Megan Lee conversion just under three minutes into the third quarter.
  • The Dutchwomen maintained the lead in the period until an 11-2 run over the final 3:23 of the quarter saw the Knights pull even at 33-33.
  • Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) scored eight points over the run for the Mount and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) canned a triple at the horn to get the Knights on even terms with 10 minutes left to play.
  • Union opened the final frame with the first six points and would not allow the Mount closer than three points over the final stanza.
  • An Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) bucket with 3:39 left to play brought the Knights to within 43-40, but Union answered with the next eight points to push its lead back out to double-figures at 51-40.
  • The Dutchwomen matched their largest lead of the game when two Conan free-throws expanded the lead to 53-41.
  • Desrats connected on a three-pointer in the closing seconds to get the Knights to the final nine-point deficit.
 
For The Knights
  • Twohig finished the night with a career-high 12 points, adding six rebounds and three steals.
  • Desrats totaled 11 points, five rebounds and a trio of thefts.
  • Phelan led the team with seven rebounds and chipped in five points.
  • Katelyn McCann (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) paced the Mount with three assists and chipped in three steals.
 
For The Dutchwomen
  • Conan equaled the game-high in scoring with 12 points to go along with nine rebounds.
  • Lee led all players with 15 rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double with nine points.
  • Perovic came off the bench to chip in eight points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary was held to just 19.4-percent shooting overall and went just 4-for-31 from three-point range.
  • Union converted at 33.9-percent overall but just 2-for-13 from behind the arc.
  • Union finished with a 28-16 advantage in paint scoring.
  • Mount Saint Mary forced 31 turnovers leading to a 28-18 edge in points off of miscues.

  • Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Tuesday when it travels to Yeshiva.
