Knights Fall Twice On Saturday; Riddle Amasses 1,000th Career Kill

Senior becomes first player in program history to surpass 1,000 winners

Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished with 15 kills against St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday, her only action of the day, and in the process set a new career kills record at the Mount and became the first player in program history to amass 1,000 career kills. Although Riddle reached two milestones on Saturday, the Knights suffered a pair of home losses at the Kaplan Center, falling to league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. 17-25, 21-25, 25-17, 14-25 and non-conference foe King's (Pa.) 10-25, 15-25, 12-25.
 
Saturday's results move the Mount's losing skid to six matches and drops it to 7-10 overall on the season and 2-3 against Skyline Conference rivals.

How It Happened
  • The Knights opened up an early 4-1 lead against the Golden Eagles in the opening set, behind a pair of Riddle kills that moved her into first place all time on the career list.
  • The Knights pushed their lead to 8-4 on a St. Joseph's attack error before the visitors reeled off 11 straight points to open a 15-8 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary battled back to 17-13 on a Riddle kill and ace from Jenna Cullinan (Levittown, N.Y.), but a 6-0 run from St. Joseph's capped by a Katie D'Angelo service ace pushed the disadvantage to 23-13.
  • The Mount scored four of the next five points to pull to with 24-17, but a service error sent the Golden Eagles to the one set advantage.
  • After falling behind 14-8 in the second set, the Knights ripped off five straight points to pull to within 14-13.
  • A three-point run late in the set, highlighted by kills from Cullinan and Ava DiScala (Seaford, N.Y.), saw the Knights cut its disadvantage to just 20-19.
  • The Golden Eagles responded with the next four points and after two straight tallies from the Mount got a kill from Deirdre Carney to open a 2-0 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board in the third, putting away 15 kills and hitting .387.
  • The Knights opened a 5-1 lead, getting two kills from Riddle to give her 1,000 in her career.
  • The Mount maintained the lead until the visitors tied it at 7-7, but the Knights never fell behind in the set.
  • A 5-1 run, keyed by two Riddle winners, pushed the Knights lead to 18-12.
  • The Mount took advantage of three St. Joseph's errors late in the frame to close the third stanza on a 3-1 run and pulled to within a set at 2-1.
  • Mount Saint Mary followed up the impressive third frame with just five kills in the deciding stanza.
  • The Mount opened a 5-2 lead early, but after a DiScala winner gave the Mount a 10-9 lead, the Golden Eagles ripped off the next four points and nine of the next 10 to surge in front 19-11.
  • A four-point run pushed the lead to 23-12 and the visitors closed the victory with a Carney kill and an ace from April Sexton.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle entered the match two kills shy of the program record and eight of 1,000 and finished with 15 kills. She now sits atop the career list in winners with 1,007. Riddle finished off a double-double with 15 digs, adding an ace and three blocks.
  • DiScala recorded a career-high seven kills for the Knights.
  • Mary Milano (East Patchogue, N.Y.) put away six winners and totaled 12 digs.
  • Cullinan added 12 digs and led the team with four aces.
  • Erin Lema (Centereach, N.Y.) added eight digs and a pair of aces.
 
For The Golden Eagles
  • Madison Gremli led the way with 12 kills.
  • Jackie Wolf finished with nine winners, nine digs and a match-high seven aces.
  • Carney totaled seven kills.
  • Kayla Martin equaled the match-high with 15 digs.
  • Sexton wrapped up the match with 12 digs and three aces.
 
Match Statistics
  • St. Joseph's finished with a slim 41-37 advantage in kills.
  • The Golden Eagles controlled the service game with a 19-8 edge in aces.
  • Total team blocks in the match were even at 3-3.
 
King's (Pa.) 3 – Mount Saint Mary 0
How It Happened
  • The Monarchs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and never looked back.
  • A second 6-0 run opened a 12-1 advantage and a 4-1 closing surge finished off the first set for the visitors.
  • The second set saw the Knights stay within three points until a 7-1 run pushed the Monarchs in front 17-8.
  • The Knights strung together five straight points late in the frame capped by a Lema winner to cut its disadvantage to 21-14.
  • King's closed the set and opened a 2-0 lead with a 3-1 run to finish the frame, capped by a Devan Moses ace.
  • A kill from Milano brought the Mount to within 4-3 in the early stages of the final frame, but King's answered with five straight points to grab a 9-3 advantage.
  • The two sides traded runs of four and three points, but a 7-0 spurt gave King's a commanding 23-10 advantage.
  • The two teams alternated the final four points before a Mount miscues closed out the match.
 
For The Knights
  • Lema and Mackenzie Warmoth (Wallingford, Conn.) each finished with six kills to lead the Knights with Lema adding five digs.
  • Cullinan led the team with 15 digs.
  • Krista Gross (East Northport, N.Y.) lifted 11 digs and recorded the team's only service ace.
  • Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) closed the day with four kills and a block.
 
For The Monarchs
  • Nine different players recorded a kill for King's led by nine from Kayla Sondberg who added a pair of blocks.
  • Joy Kindall and Kathy Shepard each put away seven kills with Shepard adding seven digs.
  • Morgan Williams led the way with 13 digs.
  • Morgan Bryant added 10 digs and three aces.
  • Bella Salvia and Adriana Conforti each posted four aces in the victory.
 
Match Statistics
  • King's finished with a 37-21 advantage in kills and hit .277 as a unit.
  • The Monarchs dominated the service game with a 13-1 edge in aces.
  • Total team blocks also went to King's, 3-1.

  • Mount Saint Mary continues conference play when it hosts Sarah Lawrence Tuesday night.
