Knights Snap Skid With Sweep Of Sarah Lawrence

Riddle posts 15 kills

Newburgh, N.Y. – Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) put away a match-high 15 kills and equaled the match-high with four service aces as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team snapped a six-match losing streak Tuesday night with a 25-21, 27-25, 25-20 Skyline Conference victory over Sarah Lawrence.
 
Tuesday's victory improves the Mount to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in league play, while Sarah Lawrence drops to 10-9 and suffers its first league loss in five outings.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first stanza saw Mount Saint Mary fall behind 10-7 and 12-9 in the early going.
  • Following an Athena Kazos service ace gave the visitors a 17-16 lead, the Knights used a 5-0 spurt to grab a 21-17 advantage. Mary Milano (East Patchogue, N.Y.) sparked the run with a trio of service aces.
  • The Knights spread its lead to 23-19 on an Ava DiScala (Seaford, N.Y.) winner and used kills from Riddle and Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) to grab the one set advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary put away 17 kills in the middle frame and overcame a late 24-21 disadvantage to grab a 2-0 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary found itself trailing 21-18 before getting a kill from Riddle and a Sarah Lawrence error to pull to within 22-21.
  • Back-to-back winners from the Gryphons moved them to within a point of evening the match before a 3-0 spurt from the Knights evened the score at 24-24.
  • A service error pushed Sarah Lawrence back in front 25-24.
  • The Knights responded with the final three points, including a kill from Romano and an ace from Riddle.
  • The Knights saw the visitors score six of the first eight points in the final frame, before the Mount scored five straight points to sneak in front 7-6 on a Milano winner.
  • After the two tams traded 4-0 runs, the Knights scored seven of the next nine points to surge in front 19-14.
  • Another 4-0 stretch from the Knights pushed the advantage to 23-16.
  • The Gryphons scored three straight points to pull to within 23-19.
  • The Knights closed out the match on a Sarah Lawrence miscue and a kill from Milano.

  • Riddle produced a match-high 15 kills and his an efficient .342 on the night. She added four aces, two blocks and eight digs to the winning effort.
  • Lema put down nine kills for the Knights, adding two aces and four digs.
  • Romano totaled seven kills for the Knights.
  • Brooke Lavelle (Staten Island, N.Y.) closed the win with five kills and a block.
  • Milano closed out a strong all-around match with four kills, four aces and eight digs.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 33 assists and total two kills and seven digs.
  • Jenna Cullinan (Levittown, N.Y.) lifted eight digs.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Davis Mathis led the team with 10 kills and 11 digs.
  • Kazos put away eight kills and added seven digs and three aces.
  • Claire O'Rourke led the team with four aces and chipped in nine digs
  • Kaille Ferguson handed out 22 assists and finished with nine digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the win with a 46-25 advantage in kills, hitting .318 as a team.
  • Service aces went to the Gryphons by a slim 14-12 margin.
  • The Knights held a slim edge in total team blocks at 2-1.
