Men’s Soccer Pushes Winning Streak To Four, Unbeaten Streak To Five At Purchase

Wyant totals four points, Martinez posts sixth shutout

Purchase, N.Y. – Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) finished with four points, Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) added three points and Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) recorded his sixth shutout of the year as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to five games following a 4-0 road win at Purchase Saturday afternoon.
 
Saturday's victory improves Mount Saint Mary to 6-4-2 overall on the season and to 4-1-1 against conference rivals, while Purchase dips to 6-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in league play.
 
First Half
  • The two teams battled without a goal for the majority of the first half, before Knights struck with the deciding tally in the 43rd minute.
  • Doyle scored the only goal of the first half, his third of the season, off an assist from Wyant at the 42:36 mark of the tilt.
  • Mount Saint Mary carried a one goal lead into the intermission after outshooting Purchase by a slim 8-6 margin in the first half.
  • Corner kicks prior to the break went to the Knights, 2-1.
  • Martinez held the Panthers off the board with a trio of first half saves.
 
Second Half
  • After a tightly contested first half, the Knights broke the game open with three tallies after halftime.
  • Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) gave the Knights some insurance with his team leading sixth goal of the season at 61:35. Wyant picked up his second assist of the game on the marker.
  • The lead grew to 3-0 in the 79th minute when Peter Ramirez (New Windsor, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the third time in 2022. He finished off an assist from Doyle at 78:35.
  • The scoring was closed out in the game when Wyant converted his fourth of the season with just under two minutes left to play. Anthony Guglielmo (Setauket, N.Y.) picked up his first assist of the season on the goal that came at 88:07.
  • Mount Saint Mary converted on three of its 12 shots after halftime, outshooting Purchase 12-11 in the second half.
  • The Knights took seven of the nine second half corner kicks.
  • Martinez was busy in the second half, preserving the shutout with seven stops.
 
For The Knights
  • Wyant finished the day with a goal and two assists, moving his team lead in assists to nine and points to 17.
  • Maggi found the back of the net with his team leading sixth goal of the season, pushing his season point total to 13.
  • Doyle scored his first game wining goal of the season and moved his career goal total to 41, just six shy of tying the career record of 47.
  • Ramirez became the fourth different Knight with at least three goals with his second half tally.
  • Guglielmo became the 14th different Knight with at least one point on the season with his assist on the Wyant tally.
  • Martinez matched his season-high with 10 saves in the game, keeping an opponent off the board for the sixth time in 2022. He dropped his goals against average to 1.17 and raised his save percentage to .806.
 
For The Panthers
  • Marlon Muerte finished with five shots, including three shots on goal.
  • Colman Cassidy unleashed four shots with two on goal.
  • Travis Stella went the distance in goal, making five saves.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the day with a tight 20-17 advantage in overall shots, while Purchase held a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Knights dominated corner kicks, 9-3.
  • Fouls in the tilt went against the Knights 18-9.
