Knights Extend Unbeaten Streak With Draw Against St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Mazzarelli nets second goal of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team hosted St. Joseph's L.I. Tuesday night and the two sides played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season for the Knights. Although the Knights did not record the win, they did move their unbeaten streak to six games. 

Tuesday's draw moves Mount Saint Mary to 6-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 against conference opponents. The Golden Eagles go to 6-2-3 on the campaign, with a 3-1-3 record in league action. 

First Half 

  • The two sides battled with no score through the first 27 minutes before the Golden Eagles would strike first.
  • Justin Gracia received a pass from James Dacos at the 27:37 mark and he would bury it in the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year to make it 1-0. 
  • The Knights would not wait long to strike back, however. At the 38:51 mark, Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) set up Mazzarelli in front of the net and he got the ball past the keeper to knot the game at 1-1.
  • The game went into intermission tied at one, but Mount Saint Mary outshot St. Joseph's 11-2 in the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Corner kicks went in the Knights favor 3-0 in the first half. 

Second Half 

  • The second half was tightly contested, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. 
  • Maggi had the best opportunity at the 80:06 mark, but his shot just barely ended up over the top of the goal. 
  • The shots were much more even in the second half, with the Mount holding a 4-3 advantage. 
  • Corner kicks stayed in the Knights favor with a 2-0 edge. 

For The Knights 

  • Mazzarelli scored his second goal of the year, bringing his point total to five. \
  • Maggi recorded his second assist of the campaign, which now means he has recorded a point in five consecutive games. He also led the team with five shots, including two on target. 
  • In goal, Caesar Martinez made three stops, bringing his save total to 61 for the year. 

For The Golden Eagles 

  • Gracia netted his fourth goal of the season for St. Joseph's, while also leading the team in shots and shots-on-goal with two each. 
  • Dacos third assist of the season moves him into second on the team in that category. 
  • Josh Lehr made seven saves in goal. 

Match Statistics 

  • Mount Saint Mary dominated the shot difference, holding a 15-5 advantage. 
  • The Golden Eagles didn't record a corner kick, as the Mount would finish with a 5-0 edge. 
  • Fouls were plentiful in the contest, as they went against the Knights 19-14. 

What's Next 

  • The Knights travel to Kings Point to take on Merchant Marine Saturday afternoon. 
  • The Golden Eagles head to Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
