Knights Stunned By USMMA In Closing Minutes

Tynan, Maggi score for the Mount

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team saw the United States Merchant Marine Academy score twice inside the final six minutes of regulation as the Knights suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 Skyline Conference road decision Saturday afternoon. Quinn Tynan (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied for the Mount.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-5-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play, while the Mariners improve to 6-4-5 overall and 3-1-4 against conference rivals.
 
First Half
  • A quiet first half featured just six combined shots.
  • USMMA closed the opening 45 minutes with a 4-2 advantage in shots.
  • First half corner kicks went to the Mariners by a 5-1 count.
  • Caesar Martinez held USMMA off the board in the first half with one save.
  • Chase Miller made a single save in the opening stanza for the Mariners.
 
Second Half
  • After a scoreless first half, the two teams erupted for five goals in the second period.
  • Tynan opened the scoring in the first minute of the second frame, burying a feed from Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) just 48 seconds into the half to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
  • The one-goal advantage held until the 70th minute when Mark Sommer converted a penalty kick for the Mariners to even the score at 1-1.
  • With the score even at 1-1, Maggi broke through with his seventh goal of the season in the 83rd minute. The unassisted tally gave the Knights a 2-1 advantage at 82:15.
  • Clinging to a one-goal lead, the Knights saw USMMA tally twice in the final six minutes to steal the victory.
  • John Germain found the back of the net at 84:02 to even the score at 2-2.
  • Just over four minutes later, Clayton Ecalono scored the deciding goal with just 1:56 left in regulation time.
  • USMMA finished the half with a 6-4 advantage in shots.
  • Mount Saint Mary took three of the five second half corner kicks.
