Newburgh, N.Y. – Prior to kickoff, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team honored the seven members of its senior class. Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) was one among many who shined, as he recorded his fourth career hat trick in the 9-0 thrashing of Old Westbury at Kaplan Field Tuesday night. Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.), Matt Flanagan (Rhinebeck, N.Y.), and Chris Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) were the other seniors who tallied points for the Mount in the win.
With Tuesday's win, the Mount has secured a playoff berth, finishing the regular season at 8-5-4 overall and 6-2-3 against conference opponents. Old Westbury ends the campaign at 1-11-3 overall and 0-8-3 against conference rivals.
First Half
- The Knights would tally five goals in the opening frame and they got started early.
- Flanagan hooked a pass in front of the net for Doyle, and he would pot his first score of the game at the 7:40 mark of the first half.
- Three minutes later, Maggi sent a pass to Wyant in front of the goal, and Wyant buried it to give the Mount a 2-0 lead.
- Doyle then scored two in the span of 75 seconds. At the 22:41 mark, Flanagan again sent one into the box and onto Doyle's foot, and Doyle once again got it by the keeper. Doyle got his third and final score of the contest at the 23:56 mark, with Wyant and Maggi both assisting on the tally to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Maggi scored the fifth and final goal of the first half in the 27th minute, with Wyant recording his second helper of the game, to give the Knights a 5-0 advantage they carried into intermission.
- The Mount held a commanding lead in shots prior to the break, outshooting Old Westbury 12-2.
- The Knights held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the opening half.
Second Half
- The second half looked a lot like the first, just with different faces.
- Three minutes into the second half, Jack Hoffman (Wingdale, N.Y.) recorded his first career goal on a penalty kick to make it 6-0 Knights.
- Just 54 seconds later, Nick Rescigno (Franklin Square, N.Y.) potted one after a series of nifty moves to give the Mount a 7-0 cushion.
- David Giraldo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded his second career score in the 80th minute, with Jaden Nelson (Staten Island, N.Y.) assisting on it.
- Nelson would close out the scoring at the 84:41 mark, as he netted his first career goal to move the Knights lead to 9-0.
- The Knights outshot the Panthers 9-6 after intermission.
- Corner kicks went in the Knights favor 2-1 in the final 45 minutes.
For The Knights
- Doyle tallied three goals to finish the regular season with seven goals and 13 points. Doyle has now scored 45 career goals, just two shy of tying the program record of 47.
- Wyant scored once and helped on two more, pushing his point total to 23.
- Maggi recorded three points by scoring once and assisting on one, ending the regular season with a team-high eight goals.
- Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) recorded three saves as he posted his seventh shutout of the year.
