Late Rally Comes Up Short In First Round Loss To Yeshiva

Knights score late, have two looks in closing minutes to tie

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team got a goal from Peter Ramirez (New Windsor, N.Y.) late in regulation and had two looks to tie in the final three minutes, but the rally came up short in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to fifth seeded Yeshiva in the First Round of the 2022 Skyline Conference Championship. Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) added goals for the Mount.
 
Sunday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 8-6-4 overall on the season, while Yeshiva improves to 8-3-2.
 
First Half
  • The Maccabees got on the board inside the first 10 minutes of play to open an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Ethan Fettaya picked up a turnover and streaked down the middle and deposited the opening goal at 6:28.
  • The Knights rallied to score the next two goals to surge in front 2-1 late in the first half.
  • Maggi got the Mount on the board with his ninth of the season at the 27:29 mark to level the score. He accepted a pass from Marco Mazzarelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and scored to top left corner to not the score at 1-1.
  • Just under 10 minutes later the Knights grabbed their only lead of the game when Wyant buried a penalty kick. He wired home his seventh goal of the season at 37:25 for the one-goal advantage.
  • The Mount's one-goal lead held until the final minute of the first half when Yeshiva found the equalizer. Lucas Beredes scored his first of two goals in the game with just 19 seconds left before halftime to even the score. David Abittan played him through and he tucked a shot inside the far post at 44:41 to send the two teams into the intermission tied at 2-2.
  • Mount Saint Mary had the better of the shots in the first half 7-5.
  • Yeshiva doubled up the Knights in first half corner kicks 4-2.
  • Caesar Martinez (Port Jervis, N.Y.) closed out the opening 45 minutes with one save in goal for the Mount with the Knights' defense producing a team save.
 
Second Half
  • The score remained tied at 2-2 until the Maccabees broke through in the 66th minute with their third goal of the game. Alexandre Assouline centered a ball from the corner that found the head of Josh Ziarno at 65:39 to push the Macs in front 3-2.
  • The Yeshiva lead grew to 4-2 nearly 11 minutes later when Baredes finished off his second goal of the game in the 77th minute. He took a ball down the right wing and beat Martinez to the far side for the team's fourth goal of the game.
  • Trailing by two goals, the Mount dialed up the pressure and got to within a single shot with just under six minutes left to play.
  • Following a Mount Saint Mary corner kick, Wyant found the ball at the top right corner of the box and played a ball to Ramirez who headed home his fourth goal of the year at 84:24 to make the score 4-3.
  • Following the goal, the Mount had two chances inside the box to tie the score, but were unable to find the equalizer.
  • Maggi fired an attempt wide in the 88th minute.
  • With just 53 seconds left in regulation, Yeshiva keeper Benjamin Brener made the biggest save of the game when a shot pin balled off of Jaden Nelson (Staten Island, N.Y.).
  • Mount Saint Mary unleashed 13 shots in the second half compared to six for the Maccabees.
  • Mount Saint Mary took all four corner kicks attempted in the second half.
  • Martinez made a single save after the break for the Knights.
  • Brener turned aside six Mount Saint Mary shots to preserve the lead.
 
For The Knights
  • Maggi scored his team leading ninth goal of the season and pushed his season point total to 23.
  • Wyant finished off a three-point game with his seventh goal of the year and his team leading 12th assist of the year. He closes the season with a team-high 26 points for the Knights.
  • Ramirez tallied for the fourth time in 2022, finishing the season fourth on the team in markers.
  • Mazzarelli recorded his second helper of the season.
  • Wyant led the team with seven shots, including five on goal.
  • Maggi produced five shots, putting two on target.
  • Martinez finished the day with a pair of saves, rounding out the year with 75 stops.
 
For The Maccabees
  • Baredes scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, including the game winner in the second half.
  • Fettaya potted his sixth goal to open the scoring in the game.
  • Ziarno closed the contest with his eighth goal of the season.
  • Fettaya and Baredes led the Macs with three shots apiece with each player putting a pair of shots on goal.
  • Brener finished off the victory with eight saves in goal.
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the game with a 20-11 advantage in shots on goal, including an 11-7 edge in shots on target.
  • Corner kicks in the game went to the Knights by a slim 6-4 margin.
  • Fouls in the tilt were even at 15-15.
 
What's Next
  • The Mount' season closes at 8-6-4.
  • Yeshiva advances to the Semifinal Round of the Skyline Conference Championship where it will take on top seed Manhattanville on Thursday.
