Brooklyn, N.Y. – Behind goals from Jake Kwong (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team defeated the Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn 2-1 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's victory moves the Knights to 7-5-4 overall on the season and 5-2-3 against conference rivals. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 6-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in league action.
First Half
- The scoring got started early when Kwong scored his second career goal, this one unassisted, at the 8:22 mark in the opening half, to give the Mount an early 1-0 advantage that they would carry into intermission.
- The Bears outshot the Knights 6-3 in the first 45 minutes of action.
- Corner kicks went to the Bears holding a slight edge, 2-1.
- Fouls were called against Mount Saint Mary 6-5 prior to the break.
- Mount Saint Mary keeper Caesar Martinez (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) made four saves in the first half.
Second Half
- The Mount struck first again after the break, when Wyant took a penalty kick for the Knights. He scored to give the Knights a 2-0 cushion.
- Victor Naci put the Bears back into the game when he scored at the 75:20 mark, when he buried an unassisted goal in the back of the net. The Bears couldn't complete the comeback effort however, and the game would finish 2-1.
- Mount Saint Mary outshot St. Joseph's 6-4 in the second half.
- Corner kicks were knotted up at 1-1 after the break.
- Fouls were whistled against the Knights 9-5 after intermission.
For The Knights
- Kwong scored his first goal of the season and second of his career in the win.
- Wyant's goal moved him back into sole possession of the team lead in points with 19.
- Martinez made five saves in goal for Mount Saint Mary.
For The Bears
Game Statistics
- St. Joseph's held the slight edge in shots 10-9 after the full 90 minutes.
- The Bears also had a small advantage in corner kicks, finishing 3-2 edge.
- Mount Saint Mary got fouls whistled against them at a 15-10 mark.
What's Next
- The Knights will host Old Westbury at Kaplan Field Tuesday night in their final regular season match of the season.
- The Bears will go on the road to take on St. Joseph's L.I.
