Newburgh, N.Y. – Behind Maggie Zecca's (Mountainside, N.J.) first two goals of the season, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team took down Merchant Marine 4-1 Wednesday night at Kaplan Field. Shannon McGowan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Maria Baldwin (Patchogue, N.Y.) scored the Mount's other two goals in the victory.
Wednesday night's victory snaps the Knights two-game skid and gets them back into the win column. They improve to 4-9-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league action, while Merchant Marine falls to 6-5-1 overall and 1-5-1 in Skyline Conference play.
First Half
- The Mount didn't waste much time before getting the scoring starting. Darla Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) hooked a pass to Zecca and she found the back of the net to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
- At the 22:19 mark, Merchant Marine struck back. Jinae Teria handled a pass from Emma Cox and Teria buried it to knot the game at 1-1.
- McGowan quickly put the Knights back in front, as she took the feed from Kaitlin Hansen (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and potted it, making the score 2-1.
- Zecca would score her second goal of the half on an unassisted score in the 33rd minute to extend the Mount's lead to 3-1.
- The Knights outshot the Mariners 13-5 in the first half.
- Corner kicks went in Mount Saint Mary's favor 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of play.
Second Half
- Baldwin would score the final goal of the contest at the 58:42 mark, an unassisted score to push the Mount farther in front 4-1.
- The Mount continued to dominate the shots, as they out shot Merchant Marine 12-6 in the final 45 minutes.
- The Knights held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the second half.
- Fouls were an even 2-2 after halftime.
For The Knights
- Zecca scored two goals in the contest, her first and second of the campaign.
- McGowan added her fourth score of the year, moving her into second on the team.
- Baldwin chipped in her third goal of the season.
- Petricca's assist gives her the team lead with four.
- Hansen picked up her third helper of the year, moving her team lead in points to 13.
- Caroline Brucato (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made four saves in goal.
For The Mariners
- Jinae Teria potted her second score of the season.
- Emma Cox assisted on Merchant Marine's lone goal.
