Knights Falter Against Montclair State, Brooklyn

Riddle closes in on career kills record

Montclair, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team returned to action Saturday and dropped a pair of straight set non-conference decisions at Montclair State. The Knights were tripped up by the host Red Hawks 13-25, 16-25, 7-25 before battling in a 18-20, 20-25, 24-26 loss to the Bulldogs. Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished the day with 17 kills for the Knights.
 
With Saturday results, the Knights have dropped their last three decisions and fall back to the .500 mark overall at 7-7.

How It Happened
  • Mount Saint Mary was limited to just 18 kills against the Red Hawks.
  • After a Haley Houghton (Bellerose, N.Y.) killed pulled the Knights to within 9-6 in the opening set, Montclair State used a 7-0 run to surge in front 16-6.
  • The Knights moved to within eight points three times late in the frame, but a 4-0 closing run gave the Red Hawks a one set advantage.
  • The Mount limited Montclair State to just nine kills in the middle frame, but scored consecutive points just three times in the set.
  • A four-point run from the Red Hawks pushed them in front 18-7 and they would not allow the Knights closer than eight points the rest of the set.
  • The Knights managed just four kills in the final frame and saw Montclair State open the set with eight of the first nine points.
  • Montclair State used a 10-0 run to open a 23-5 lead and used kills from Carly Waterman and Elizabeth Killeen to finish off the sweep.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle was held to under 10 kills in a match for the first time, rounding out the match with a team-high six winners. Riddle added a team-high seven digs in the match.
  • Erin Lema (Centereach, N.Y.) chipped in four kills and a service ace.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 15 assists and lifted four digs.
  • Angelyse Orellana (Newark, N.Y.) added three digs and an ace.
 
For The Red Hawks
  • Killeen led all players in the match with eight kills.
  • Mia Capriglione contributed six kills, six digs and a match-high five blocks.
  • Waterman led all players with four aces to go along with three kills.
  • Leah Higgins finished with seven winners and two aces.
 
Match Statistics
  • Montclair State finished the match with a 37-18 advantage in kills, hitting .433 as a team.
  • The Red Hawks dominated the service game with a 16-2 advantage in aces.
  • Montclair State controlled the net with a 6-0 edge in total team blocks.

How It Happened
  • The Mount rebounded with 26 kills in the second match of the day.
  • The Knights used a pair of Brooklyn miscues to pull to within 17-15 in the opening set before trading the next six points with the Bulldogs.
  • After an attack error from Brooklyn brought the Mount to within 20-18, the Bulldogs scored the final five points of the set, including two kills from Aleah Rafat, to open a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mount used a 4-0 run early in the middle stanza, highlighted by kills from Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Ava DiScala (Seaford, N.Y.), to open an 8-5 lead.
  • Led by two kills from Riddle, the Mount used a 3-0 run to grab a 13-11 advantage.
  • The Knights used another 3-0 run late in the frame to move in front 19-16.
  • Trailing by three points, Brooklyn used a 9-1 run to close the set to take a 2-0 advantage.
  • The third set saw the Knights score five straight points behind kills from Mary Milano (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and Riddle to grab a 15-9 lead.
  • Brooklyn used a 5-0 run to close to within 17-15 before a quick 3-2 spurt from the Mount gave it a 20-17 lead.
  • The Knights got another kill from Milano as part of a 3-0 run to pushed them to a 23-19 lead.
  • Brooklyn again closed strong, scoring seven of the final eight points to close out the sweep.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle put away 11 kills for the Knights and finished a double-double with 11 digs. She now stands with 987 career winners, just six shy of matching the career record and 13 shy of becoming the first player in program history with 1,000 career kills.
  • Romano finished the match with six kills for the Mount, adding an ace.
  • Lema posted four kills and eight digs.
  • Cammarata added 22 more assists and led the team with two aces. She added nine digs in the match for the Knights.  
 
For The Bulldogs
  • Rafat led all players with 12 kills, hitting .308 in the match.
  • Ashley Fung chipped in eight kills, 13 digs and three aces.
  • Amra Mulic handed out 17 assists and added three aces.
  • Ruti Joshi finished with seven kills and three blocks.
 
Match Statistics
  • Brooklyn closed the match with a 37-26 advantage in kills.
  • Aces went to the Bulldogs by a 13-4 margin.
  • Brooklyn posted a 4-2 edge in total team blocks.

  • Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Monday when it travels to Manhattanville.
