Schenectady, N.Y. – Playing its second straight road game to open the season, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team and Union battled to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon.
Caroline Schrag (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) scored her first career goal in the contest with
Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) making 15 saves in goal in her Mount Saint Mary debut.
Sunday's contest marked the third straight season the Mount and Union have squared off with the Dutchwomen winning the previous two meetings. With the draw both teams move to 1-0-1 on the young season.
First Half
- Mount Saint Mary got on the board first late in the first half with Schrag converting her first of the season at the 39:58 mark of the opening stanza.
- Darla Patricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the goal, collecting her first career point for the Knights.
- Schrag's goal came on just the second shot of the half for the Knights and the first attempt since Petricca put a shot on goal 2:03 into the game.
- Union held a 7-2 edge in shots prior to halftime and took 12 first half corner kicks.
- Kakavas turned aside four shots in the first half with Union keeper Abby Mitty making a single save.
Second Half
- Union carried the play after halftime, posting a 14-1 advantage in shots in the second period.
- The Mount's lone attempt in the second stanza came off the foot of Ashlee Peters (Fishkill, N.Y.) in the 60th minute.
- The Dutchwomen found the equalizer with just over nine minutes left in regulation when Erin O'Shea finished off a feed from Emma Schleimer at the 80:56 mark of the contest.
- Kakavas made a pair of saves after the Union goal to keep the game knotted and finished the second half with eight stops.
Overtime Periods
- Union outshot the Mount 4-0 over the two overtime periods, recording two shots in each extra session.
- Kakavas turned aside each of the four attempts in overtime, including her final save of the day with just over two minutes left in the second overtime period.
For The Knights
- Schrag is the first player to be credited with a goal for the Knights over the first two games after an Own Goal in Friday's 1-0 win over Skidmore.
- Petricca and Peters each finished with one shot for the Mount.
- Kakavas made 15 stops in her first action of the season.
For Union
- Schleimer recorded an assist and a game-high 12 shots, including nine shots on goal.
- O'Shea finished with four shots, two on goal, and scored her first goal of the season coming off the bench.
- Eight different Dutchwomen finished the game with at least one shot, with six players posting multiple attempts.
- Mitty finished the day with one save in 110:00 minutes of work.
Match Statistics
- Union finished with a convincing 28-3 advantage in shots, including a 17-2 edge in shots on goal.
- The Dutchwomen dominated corner kicks, 15-2.
- Fouls in the tilt were whistled 7-6 against the Knights.
