Knights Edged At Vassar, 2-1

Wyant converts PK in first half

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team opened the 2021 season with a hard fought 2-1 loss on the road at Vassar on Saturday afternoon. Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) provided the scoring for the Knights with a first half penalty kick for his first tally of the year.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 0-1 on the season and marks the first season opening loss for the Knights since 2015. Saturday's win evens Vassar's record at 1-1 and gives it six straight wins over the Mount and a 6-0-1 record in the last seven meetings.
 
First Half
  • Wyant gave the Mount a 1-0 lead when the Knights were awarded a penalty kick at the 8:46 mark of the match. The goal is the 20th of Wyant's career and moves him to 6-for-7 in penalties in his career.
  • Vassar answered with the equalizer in the 31st minute when Vassar was awarded an Own Goal to even the score at 1-1.
  • Vassar went without a shot before halftime after scoring at 31:03 with Peter Ramirez recording the Mount's only attempt after the tying goal over the final 14 minutes of the half.
  • Vassar finished the half with a 5-3 advantage in shots and took the only corner kick prior to halftime.
 
Second Half
  • The game remained tied at 1-1 until the 76th minute when Vassar converted the deciding goal playing a man-up. Duncan Keker got the goal off and assist from Derek Sando who started the play on a corner kick.
  • Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the second half 9-0.
  • The Knights played a man-down the final 14 minutes of the contest.
 
For The Knights
  • Wyant converted the sixth penalty of his career and was one of three different players with a shot in the game.
  • David Giraldo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Ramirez finished with the other attempts for the Knights.
  • Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) made four saves in goal for the Mount in his first appearance for the program.
 
For The Brewers
  • Keker was the only Vassar player credited with a goal in the game with Sando picking up the assist on the game winning goal.
  • Teddy Borgos led the team with three shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Eric Wnorowski was forced to make just one save in goal in earning the win.
 
Match Statistics
  • Vassar finished with a 14-3 advantage in overall shots and a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Brewers took four of the five corner kicks awarded in the game.
  • Fouls in the match were whistled 20-17 against the Knights.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights will play their home opener on Tuesday against Middlebury with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
  • The Brewers will travel to Cobleskill on Wednesday in their third game of the season.
