Women’s Soccer Edges Skidmore, 1-0

Brucato makes 14 saves; Own goal decides outcome

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – Playing in its first game since November 6, 2019, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team scored a 1-0 road win at Skidmore on Friday afternoon to open the 2021 season. A Skidmore own goal was the deciding tally, while freshman Caroline Brucato (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made 14 saves in her collegiate debut.
 
Friday's win was the season opener for both squads with Skidmore falling to 0-1 and the Mount improving to 1-0. The season opening win is the second win in the last three seasons in the initial game of the season for the Knights.
 
First Half
  • The Thoroughbreds got off the first six shots of the game, with Brucato stopping three attempts over the first 15:31 of the contest.
  • KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded the Mount's first shot of the game, putting a shot on target at the 20:31 mark of the match.
  • Overall in the first half, Skidmore finished with a 11-2 edge in shots with Brucato turning aside six attempts.
  • The Thoroughbreds took each of the two corner kicks awarded prior to halftime.
 
Second Half
  • The Knights took a pair of corner kicks inside the first five minutes of the second half, but were unable to record a shot.
  • Skidmore recorded the first four shots of the second half, including a penalty kick at the 62:48 mark of the tilt. Brucato denied the attempt and the rebound shot skittered wide to keep the game scoreless.
  • Just over three minutes after the penalty was awarded, the Mount got on the board courtesy of a Skidmore own goal. A Thoroughbred defender played the ball back and it found the back of the net with just over 24 minutes left in regulation,
  • Skidmore outshot the Knights 8-3 down the stretch, with Brucato securing the shutout with five more saves over the final 24 minutes.
For The Knights
  • Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) and Liz Ellsworth led the Knights with two shots apiece, including one shot on goal.
  • Platt added the other shot for the Knights.
  • Brucato made six saves in the first half and eight more in the second for 14 saves in her collegiate debut.
For Skidmore
  • Kathryn Dunn led all players with six shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Isabelle Sullivan came off the bench to post five shots, including a team-high three shots on goal.
  • Ava Keller finished the contest with three saves in goal.
 
Game Statistics
  • Skidmore finished with a 26-5 advantage in overall shots, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Thoroughbreds 5-2.
  • Fouls in the match were whistled 10-8 against the Knights.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights will remain in the Capitol Region when they take on Union on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Union opens the season on Saturday at home against Babson.
  • Skidmore travels to Mount Holyoke on Saturday in search of its first win of the season.
