Knights Collect Conference Victory At Sarah Lawrence

Bornstad, Zecca tally for the Mount

Yonkers, N.Y. – Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) and Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) scored goals and Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) recorded her first career shutout in goal as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team picked up a 2-0 road win at Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday night.
 
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 3-3-2 overall on the season and to 2-0-1 in league play and pushes its winning streak against the Gryphons to seven contests dating back to 2014. Sarah Lawrence drops to 3-6 overall on the season and 0-2 in league play.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the opening period with a 13-5 advantage in shots and took each of the two corner kicks in the half.
  • The eventual game winning goal came off the foot of Bornstad in the 36th minute as she scored to the high to the right at the 35:13 mark of the contest.
  • Following the marker, the Mount would close the half with seven of the final eight shots.
  • Kakavas rounded out the opening 45 minutes with a trio of saves.
  • Sarah Lawrence keeper, Bridgette Lee, was busy with seven stops prior to the intermission.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary kept the pressure on in the second stanza, outshooting the Gryphons 8-2 after the break.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the second period with a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Bornstad's marker remained the only goal until the 72nd minute when Zecca broke through with her first goal of the season. She tallied to the low left hand side of the goal at 71:50 to give the Mount the final two goal cushion.
  • Kakavas was forced to make just one stop after halftime.
  • Lee closed the second half with three more saves for the Gryphons.
 
For The Knights
  • Bornstad and Zecca each scored their first goals of the season for the Knights.
  • Bornstad moved into the team lead in points with five, sitting with one goal and a team-high three assists through eight games.
  • Seven different Knights recorded a shot in the game, led by nine from Bornstad, including five shots on goal.
  • Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) recorded four shots and joined Zecca with two shots on goal.
  • Kakavas recorded her first career shutout with four saves. She now has 35 stops on the season with a .854 save percentage and a 1.30 goals against average.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Lainie Cadieux paced the team with three shots, all on target.
  • Lee closed a busy night in goal with 10 saves.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the victory with a 21-7 advantage in overall shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Knights by a wide 12-3 margin.
  • Fouls in the contest went against the Mount 8-4.
