Knights Blanked By NYU, 2-0

Kakavas makes 14 saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – Making up the originally scheduled season opener that was washed out on September 1, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to visiting New York University Monday night. Sophomore Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) finished the night with 14 saves.
 
Monday's los drops Mount Saint Mary to 2-3-2 overall on the season, while the Violets improve to 5-2 on the year.
 
First Half
  • NYU finished the first half with an 11-3 advantage in shots, including a pair of penalty kicks.
  • Corner kicks in the half were even at 2-2.
  • The eventual game winning goal came off the foot of Kelli Keady in the 17th minute. She would streak down the left wing from just inside midfield and tuck a shot inside the near post at 16:15 for all the scoring the Violets would need.
  • The Mount had a chance to even the score when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.), however, rang the shot off the bar.
  • NYU would be awarded two penalty kicks in the final six minutes of the half, but Kakavas denied each attempt. NYU would misfire on the rebound both times to take just the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
  • Kakavas rounded out the half with five stops.
  • Riley Felsher made a single stop for the Violets with a team save awarded as a defender knocked away a shot bounding towards the net.
 
Second Half
  • NYU would strike early in the second half to close out the scoring in the game. After Gabriella Funk was denied just 43 seconds into the period, Sam March deposited her second goal of the year just over a minute into the frame to give the Violets the final 2-0 advantage.
  • NYU finished the second period with a commanding 16-1 advantage in shots.
  • The Violets also took a 4-2 edge in corner kicks after halftime.
  • Kakavas rounded out the half with nine more saves, in addition to a team save.
 
For The Knights
  • Kakavas recorded double-figures in saves for the second time this year with her 14 stops.
  • Lauren Engel (Red Hook, N.Y.), Darla Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), Bornstad and KellyAnn Platt each finished the night with a shot.
 
For NYU
  • 11 different Violets recorded a shot in the game.
  • Funk led all players with five attempts.
  • Keady tallied her first goal of the season
  • March collected her second tally of the year.
  • Felshner recorded one stop to earn the shutout.

  • NYU finished the night with a 27-4 advantage in shots, including a 17-2 edge in shots on goal.
