Knights Dealt Road Setback At William Paterson

Riddle posts 16 kills, Barbara 17 digs

Wayne, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team suffered its second straight loss on Thursday following a 23-25, 17-25, 10-25 road non-conference loss at William Paterson. Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the offense with 16 kills with Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) lifting a team-high 17 digs.
 
Thursday's result moves each team to the .500 mark, with the Knights falling to 4-4 and the Pioneers improving to 4-4 on the young season.
 
First Set
  • The Knights totaled 12 kills in the opening set, but saw William Paterson put away 20 winners and rally from a five-point deficit to open a 1-0 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary opened a 15-10 advantage following three straight points, including two kills from Riddle.
  • The Knights maintained a five-point edge and moved in front 18-13 following a Haley Houghton (Bellerose, N.Y.) winner.
  • The Pioneers climbed to within 18-16 following a three-point run and scored four of the final five points of the set to rally to the set victory.
  • A Riddle kill brought the Mount to within 24-23, but a winner from Dakota Apicella gave the Pioneers the 25-23 win.
 
Second Set
  • The Pioneers used a four-point run, aided by three Mount Saint Mary miscues, to move in front 9-6 in the early going of the frame.
  • A second four-point spurt from William Paterson moved it in front 14-9.
  • William Paterson put together a third 4-0 run to move in front 20-12, keyed by three more Mount Saint Mary errors.
  • The Knights climbed to within 21-16 with a 4-1 spurt, keyed by a pair of Riddle kills and a KayLani Baynes (New Windsor, N.Y.) service ace.
  • The Mount managed just one more point in the frame with the Pioneers scoring the four of the final five points of the set.
  • Each team recorded 10 kills in the middle set, with the Pioneers committing just five attack errors.
 
Third Set
  • Mount Saint Mary was limited to four kills in the final frame, with the Pioneers registering 11 winners while hitting .474.
  • The Pioneers broke a 3-3 tie with eight straight points, keyed by four kills from Leila Ksiyer.
  • The Knights scored consecutive points just twice in the third set, once to knot the score at 3-3 and not again until a pair of William Paterson errors made the score 22-10.
  • The Pioneers closed out the set with the final three points, including a kill from Ksiyer and a service ace from Kathleen Burrough.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle led the team with 16 kills and closed out a double-double with 14 digs while adding two blocks.
  • Wolf closed the match with six winners and seven digs.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 25 assists and lifted nine digs.
  • Barbara led the team with 17 digs and recorded one of the team's three service aces.
  • Baynes finished with two aces and eight digs.
  • Houghton paced the Knights with three total blocks and added a pair of kills.
 
For The Pioneers
  • Ksiyer led all players with 19 kills and hit a blistering .533 in the match. She added 10 digs and a pair of blocks to the winning effort.
  • Apicella totaled 13 kills and led all players with 22 digs.
  • Burrough finished up with seven kills, 17 digs and a pair of aces.
  • Kristin Volavka handed out a match-high 32 assists and added 10 digs.
 
Match Statistics
  • William Paterson posted a 41-26 advantage in kills and hit .241 as a team against a .040 shoring for the Knights.
  • The Pioneers held a 5-3 advantage in service aces.
  • Total team blocks went to the Knights 3-2.
 
What's Next
  • The Mount opens Skyline Conference play with a trip to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday as part of a tri-match with Baruch.
  • William Paterson hosts a non-conference tri-match with Bard and John Jay on Saturday.
