Knights Battle Past Mount Saint Vincent, Sweep Baruch

Riddle totals 25 kills in conference win over Dolphins

Riverdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team stopped a mini two-match skid on Saturday with a five-set Skyline Conference win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent and a straight set non-conference victory over Baruch. Junior Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) produced a season-high 25 kills as the Mount rallied from a two-set deficit for a 15-25, 26-28, 25-18, 25-16, 15-12 win over the Dolphins. Riddle added 19 more winners in a 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 win over the Bearcats to round out a successful day.
 
With Saturday's sweep, Mount Saint Mary improves to 6-4 on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The win over the Dolphins is the first since a sweep in 2018 and gives the Knights 12 victories in the last 19 meetings.
 
Mount Saint Mary 3 – College of Mount Saint Vincent 2
First Set
  • The Knights were limited to five kills in the opening frame against the Dolphins, with Mount Saint Vincent putting away 10 kills.
  • Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the set.
  • Mount Saint Mary put together a 6-0 run late in the set to climb to within 21-14. Riddle put away one kill over the run and Jackie Wolf (Kings Park, N.Y.) added an ace.
  • The Dolphins closed the set with a 4-1 stretch, taking advantage of three Mount Saint Mary miscues.
 
Second Set
  • The Knights rebounded to put away 10 kills in the second set, with the Dolphins posting 14 winners.
  • Mount Saint Mary took its first lead of the match following a 4-0 run that pushed it in front 12-11. Wolf posted two aces in the run with Riddle adding a kill.
  • Mount Saint Mary spread its lead to 16-13 on a Riddle winner that closed a 4-1 run.
  • The Dolphins surged back in front following a 7-2 run that gave it a 20-18 advantage.
  • The Knights quickly evened the score at 20-20 and a 3-0 spurt saw it pull back in front 23-22.
  • The remainder of the set would see three more ties, before the Dolphins pulled in front 2-0 following a ball handling error and a kill from Melanieann Broderick.
 
Third Set
  • The Mount's comeback began in the third set when it put away nine kills and held the Dolphins to a .000 attack percentage.
  • Mount Saint Mary broke a 5-5 tie with a seven-point run that pushed it in front 12-5. Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) sparked the run with a trio of service aces.
  • The Knights kept to the Dolphins from getting closer than four points the rest of the frame and a 3-0 run, pushed the Knights in front 18-11.
  • After the Dolphins closed to within 20-16, the Knights scored four of the final five points, including kills from Riddle and Haley Houghton (Bellrose, N.Y.) and a service ace from Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.).
 
Fourth Set
  • The Knights evened the match at 2-2 after recording 10 kills and hitting an efficient .318 in the fourth set.
  • Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead with a 5-0 run in the early going.
  • After the Dolphins regained the lead, the Knights put together a 6-0 run that pushed it in front 12-8. Wolf posted a pair of service aces in the run.
  • The Knights would allow the Dolphins to score back-to-back points just once after regaining the lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary took the final three points of the set, capped by a Riddle winner to even the match at 2-2.
 
Fifth Set
  • In the deciding fifth set, the Knights hit a match-high .353 and posted eight kills against just two attack errors.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the first five points of the fifth, getting a pair of kills from Riddle and two aces from Wolf.
  • The Dolphins would rally to tie the score at 10-10 following a quick 3-0 run.
  • After a Samantha Schroeder kills tied things at 12-12 for the Dolphins, Mount Saint Mary took advantage of a Dolphin error and two kills from Riddle to finish the comeback and open conference play with the victory.
 
For Mount Saint Mary
  • Riddle posted a season-high 25 kills, just one of her career-high of 26 set in 2019. She has at least 11 kills in each of the last six matches and finished a double-double against the Dolphins hitting .392 with a team-high 17 digs, three blocks and two aces.
  • Wolf chipped in nine winners for the Mount and finished with seven service aces, just one off her career-high. Wolf also chipped in 10 digs.  
  • Stephanie Mele (Newburgh, N.Y.) produced five kills and hit .286 for the Knights.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 33 assists and added eight digs.
  • Houghton posted three total blocks and put away two kills.
  • Barbara lifted 16 digs with Hydo posting 13 digs and four aces.
 
For Mount Saint Vincent
  • Schroeder led the team with 12 kills and added nine digs.
  • Broderick added eight kills and 13 digs.
  • Olivia Kane led all players with 20 digs.
  • Madison Gale wrapped up the match with 33 assists and 12 digs.
 
Match Statistics:
  • Mount Saint Vincent held a slim 45-42 advantage in kills with the Knights hitting .089 against a .084 effort for the Dolphins.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a 15-7 edge in service aces.
  • Total team blocks went to the Dolphins 7-4.
 
Mount Saint Mary 3 – Baruch 0
First Set
  • The Knights got off to a quick start against the Bearcats, putting away nine kills and holding Baruch to a -.054 attack percentage in the opening frame.
  • Mount Saint Mary broke open a 7-6 match with a 5-0 run and later used a 6-1 spurt to pull in front 20-11.
  • Mount Saint Mary put the set away with a 3-1 stretch aided by two Riddle kills.
 
Second Set
  • The Knights collected 13 more kills in the middle frame and rallied from a 6-3 deficit with a 3-0 run to even things at 6-6.
  • The two sides stayed within two points until a 5-0 run for the Mount pushed it in front 18-13. Riddle and Danielle Guarasci (Plainview, N.Y.) combined for three kills over the run.
  • After the Knights pulled in front 24-20, the Bearcats ripped off three straight points to get to within a point.
  •  Riddle put away a kill to stop the run and give the Knights a two set advantage.
 
Third Set
  • The Knights earned the sweep with 14 kills while hitting .263 in the final frame.
  • After falling behind 7-3 and 8-4, the Knights used a 7-1 run to pull in front 11-9. Riddle keyed the stretch with a kill and an ace.
  • The Knights used a 4-0 run, aided by three Baruch errors, to jump in front 15-12 and later used a 3-1 spurt to move in front 22-17.
  • Baruch battled back to within 24-23 with a 6-2 stretch, but a Wolf kill stopped the run and sent the Mount to their second win of the day.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle added 19 more kills against Baruch while hitting .340. She closed her second double-double of the day with 10 digs, adding two aces.
  • Wolf contributed six winners, two aces and 10 digs.
  • Cammarata finished the victory with 26 assists and two aces to go along with 14 digs.
  • Barbara equaled the team-high with 14 digs for the Knights.
 
For The Bearcats
  • Baruch was led by 12 kills and 15 digs from Sarah Chung.
  • Ada Cao finished with eight kills and six digs.
  • Aminina Muminovic led the team with 27 assists.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a 34-31 advantage in kills in the match.
  • Service aces went to the Knights by a tight 9-7 margin.
  • Baruch finished with a slim 2-1 edge in total team blocks.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Tuesday when it travels to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
