Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Road Loss At Farmingdale State

Brian Esposito leads Knights in loss

Farmingdale, N.Y. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team was dealt a 14-3 defeat at the hands of Farmingdale State on Friday afternoon. Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) paced the Mount with three points and nine groundballs.
 
Farmingdale State stifled the Mount over the first two periods, allowing just one goal in each stanza prior to halftime. Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought the Mount to within 2-1 in the first period with his initial goal of the campaign, but the Rams scored the next three goals to open a 5-1 lead at the 10:21 mark of the second quarter.
 
Esposito scored at the 3:15 mark of the second frame to get the Knights to within 5-2, but the Rams tallied twice in the final 2:21 of the second period, including a Corey McMahon goal with 11 seconds left before halftime, to take a 7-2 lead into the intermission.
 
Farmingdale State finished the first 30 minutes with a 26-18 advantage in shots, while the Mount posted an 18-17 edge in groundballs. The Rams held a slim edge in face-offs at 6-4 and scored twice with the man-advantage prior to the break.
 
Coming out of halftime, the Rams scored the first seven goals, outscoring the Mount 4-0 in the third period and 3-1 in the final frame. Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.) scored the Mount only goal after halftime, potting his second tally of the season with just over a minute left to play.
 
Esposito was one of three Knights to score in the game and added a pair of assists to move his season total in helpers to five and points to eight with both marks leading the team. He closed out a strong all-around game with nine groundballs and six caused turnovers.
 
Ryan Olmstead (Millbrook, N.Y.) secured eight groundballs for the Knights with Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) adding three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Zachary Beam (Montgomery, N.Y.) won nine face-offs for the Knights and added a trio of groundballs.
 
Farmingdale State was led by four goals and six points from Terrence Haggerty with Thomas Stock adding three tallies and a pair of assists. John McMahon rounded out the win with six face-off wins, three goals and six groundballs.
 
Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) made 11 saves in goal in the loss for the Mount, with Kevin Loonie making 10 stops in 30 minutes of work for the Rams.
 
Farmingdale State wrapped up the win with the edge in shots 46-30 and face-offs 12-8. Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in groundballs at 41-34.
 
At 0-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns home on April 13 when it plays host to Purchase. Face-off with the Panthers is set for 7:00 p.m. at Kaplan Field.
