Men’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Purchase, 16-4

11 Different Knights score in victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – Eleven different players scored at least one goal and 13 players posted at least one point as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team scored its first win of the season in convincing fashion with a 16-4 triumph over Purchase. Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the scoring attack with three goals.
 
Mount Saint Mary wasted little time breaking the game open on Tuesday, scoring six times in the first 3:55 of the first period. Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) got the scoring started just 47 seconds into the game with Zachary Beam (Montgomery, N.Y.) winning the ensuing face-off and scoring just six seconds later to an early two goal lead.
 
Travers potted his first goal at the 13:23 mark of the first period with Brandon Holloway (Garden City, N.Y.) scoring between a pair of Ryan Olmstead (Millbrook, N.Y.) goals to push the Mount out in front by six tallies.
 
Purchase finally got on the board at the 6:50 mark of the first quarter and scored again at the 13:20 point of the second stanza, but the Mount countered with six straight goals to close the half and carry a commanding 13-2 lead into the intermission. Colby Martin (Huntington, N.Y.), Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, N.J.), Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) and R.J. Maher (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) all scored man-up goals for the Knights in the final three minutes of the second quarter.
 
Mount Saint Mary finished the first half with 28-5 advantage in shots and dominated face-offs, winning 13 of the 17 contested. The Mount also held a convincing advantage in groundballs at the break at 27-10.
 
Mount Saint Mary continued their scoring run coming out of halftime, potting the only two goals of the third period and the first tally of the final stanza. Jake Camerino (Shelton, Conn.) and Travers scored in the third with Rodriguez potting his second of the game at the 13:04 mark of the fourth.
 
Travers rounded out the win with three markers with Olmstead, Kearns and Rodriguez all scoring twice. Both Olmstead and Kearns collected three groundballs apiece.
 
Camerino finished a strong night with a goal and a pair of assists for the Knights with Martin, Maher, Holloway and Vinny Vaccaro (Floral Park, N.Y.) all posting a goal and an assist. Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished a strong all-around game with three assists, three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led the Mount with five groundballs on the night with Martin, Beam and Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) all scooping four. Beam rounded out the night 10-for-14 in face-offs, while Anthony Paggiotta (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) won six of the 10 draws he took.
 
Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) picked up the win in goal with nine saves in the game and added a groundball. Eamon McGee posted nine stops in the loss for Purchase.
 
Mount Saint Mary held convincing advantages in each team category, outshooting Purchase 41-20 overall and 25-13 in shots on goal. The Mount finished with a 43-29 advantage in groundballs and controlled the face-off 'x', winning 16 of the 24 draws taken. The Mount was 15-for-20 in clearing chances and scored four times with the man-advantage.
 
At 1-2 overall and in Skyline Conference play, the Knights will be home again on Friday when they play host to Manhattanville. Face-off with the Valiants is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
