Knights Collect Two Victories At Purchase

Goodwin homers, drives in winning run in opener

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team picked up two wins at Purchase on Tuesday, taking the final Skyline Conference decision over the Panthers 3-2 in ten innings before winning the non-conference game of the four game series 5-2. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a big game in the opener, homering and driving in the deciding run in the tenth.

Game 1 – Mount Saint Mary 3 – Purchase 2 (Final/10)
Mount Saint Mary got on the board two batters into game one to take an early 2-0 lead. Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the frame with a single through the middle, before Goodwin blasted a two-run home run to right field to push the Knights in front.

The lead was sliced in half in the home half of the fourth inning with Purchase plating a run when Myles Scarry drew a bases loaded walk. The Panthers recorded just one hit in the inning, taking advantage of an error, a hit by pitch and a pair of walks.

The Knights' lead was erased in the fifth when Purchase knotted the score at 2-2 on a Dylan Flynn doubled that drove home James Shea, who drew a one-out walk in the frame.

Neither team scored again until the tenth when Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Mirra recorded one out-singles to put the go ahead run in scoring position. Goodwin followed with a single to left field that chased home Franco with the eventual game winning run. Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) retired the side in order in the tenth to earn the win in relief.

Goodwin went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate for the Knights in game one with a double and home run, adding a run scored, stolen base and three RBI. Mirra went 2-for-5 with a run out of the leadoff spot with Devin Tait also going 2-for-5.

Anthony Pacifico (Newburgh, N.Y.) took a no decision after working 7.2 strong innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while fanning five. Borriello earned the win in relief with 2.1 hitless innings that featured a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2 – Mount Saint Mary 5 – Purchase 2
The Knights completed the sweep on Tuesday after outhitting Purchase 10-3. The Mount broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with three runs and tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away. Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y.), Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) and Anthony Liaetta (North Massapequa, N.Y.) ripped consecutive  doubles to open the scoring and give the Knights a 2-0 lead with Michael Paolo (Milton, N.Y.) driving in Liaetta with a run scoring single.

The Mount extended their lead to 4-0 when Barnes chased home Mirra with a two-out run scoring single to left field. The Knights closed out their scoring in the game an inning later when Ben Crowley delivered Paolo with a two-out infield single.

Purchase did all of its scoring in the home half of the sixth with Isaac Reyes driving in both runs with a single to left field.

Mirra picked up two more hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Barnes finished up game two 3-for-3 with a double, run and RBI with Nolasco going 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI. Laietta and Paolo each finished with a hit, run and RBI for the Knights.
