Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team trailed late in each end of a Saturday doubleheader at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn but rallied for 4-2 and 13-3 victories to take the first two games of the Skyline Conference series. The Knights used a 12-run, 10-hit eighth inning to rally for the game two victory.
Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 4 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 2
St. Joseph's jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning in the opener and maintained an advantage in the game until the final frame. Mount Saint Mary was held off the board until the fifth when it strung together two hits to slice its deficit to 2-1.
Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led off the fifth with a double and scored the Knights' first run when
Dominick Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y.) shot a two-out single to left center to get the Mount on the board.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, Mount Saint Mary recorded three hits and worked a walk in its final at-bat to scratch out three runs and pull in front 4-2. A one-out single from
Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) started a string of three straight singles with Goodwin scoring on a
Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) base hit to knot the score at 2-2.
The Knights pulled in front when Marzigliano scored on a wild pitch and Tait scored an insurance tally when
Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) worked a two-out bases loaded walk. The Bears would put the tying runs n base in the home half of the seventh, but
Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) wiggled out of trouble to earn the complete game victory.
Borriello improved to 2-1 on the season after surrendering just two hits. He did not allow an earned run in the game and struck out six.
Goodwin, Marzigliano, Tait and Franco all finished the opener with two hits and a run scored with Marzigliano and Tat driving in runs.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 13 – St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 3 (8 innings)
After getting stifled for seven innings in game two, the Mount overcame a 3-1 deficit in the eighth with 10 hits and 12 runs scored to complete the sweep. The Knights were limited to only three hits and a single run over the first seven frames.
Trailing 3-1 after seven innings, the first six hitters reached base in the eighth with Marzigliano knotting the score at 3-3 with a two-run double and Tait pushing the Knights in front 5-3 with a two-run triple.
Joe Stewart (Franklin Square, N.Y.)followed with double that chased Tait home and gave the Mount a 6-3 lead.
After the first out was recorded, the Knights reloaded the bases with one out and got three straight run scoring singles from Marzigliano,
Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) and Goodwin. Mirra drove home a pair of runs with his one out safety.
Tait added an RBI single, his second run scoring hit of the inning, to push the lead to 11-3 and
Michael Paolo (Milton, N.Y.) and
Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) finished off the rally with two-out RBI singles to push the lead to the final 13-3 advantage. The Bears loaded the bases in the eighth, but were unable to push a run across to force the ninth inning.
Four Knights finished game two with at least two hits with Tait leading the way with a 3-for-5 effort that included two runs scored and three RBI. Mirra, Goodwin and Marzigliano all posted two hits with Mirra scoring three times and driving in two others. Marzigliano rounded out the win with three RBI for the Knights.
Freshman
Mike Scotto (Putnam, N.Y.) picked up his second win of the season and moved to 2-1 with 4.0 innings of work, allowing just one earned run. He struck out three against just one walk. Christopher Synder (Islip, N.Y.) and
Anthony Collura (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each followed with 2.0 scoreless innings of work.
Saturday's sweep gives Mount Saint Mary four straight wins and pushes it to 6-5 overall and to 5-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights and Bears will conclude their series Sunday afternoon in Newburgh starting at 12:00 p.m.
