Knights Have Winning Streak Stopped By #22 RPI

Yearwood nets 20 to lead MSMC

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon following a 77-54 home loss to #22 RPI. Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led two Knights in double-figures with a game-high 20 points.
 
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-6 overall on the season, while the Engineers improve to an unblemished 8-0.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary never led the in the contest and got as close as two points on three occasions after falling behind 4-0 in the early going.
  • Following a Yearwood jumper that cut the Knights' deficit to 15-13, the Engineers put together a 14-5 run to pull in front 29-18 with just over four minutes left in the first half.
  • RPI went 4-for-8 from the floor over the 4:55 stretch and connected on five of its six free-throw attempts.
  • Back-to-back layups from Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) brought the Mount to within 29-22 with 2:44 left before halftime.
  • RPI scored the final nine points of the half, including three-pointers from Patrick Mahoney and Will Rubin, to pull away for a 38-22 halftime advantage.
  • RPI shot just shy of 42-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and connected on five three-pointers.
  • Mount Saint Mary converted at 39.1-percent from the floor overall and went 1-for-10 from behind the arc.
  • Rubin led all scorers at the break with 11 points for the Engineers.
  • Yearwood paced the Knights with seven first half points.
 
Second Half
  • RPI came out with the first five points in the second half to open a 43-22 advantage and the Engineers did not allow the Knights closer than 18 points the rest of the afternoon.
  • RPI grew its lead to a game-high 28 points, at 58-30, with 13:03 left to play on a three-point play from Jonny Angbazo.
  • A Yearwood three-pointer cut the deficit to 61-43, but the Knights went nearly four minutes without a field goal late in the second half as the Engineers finished with the final 23-point advantage.
  • RPI shot an efficient 53.8-percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Knights from the charity stripe after halftime 8-3.
  • Mount Saint Mary improved to 44.8-percent shooting in the second half.
  • Mahoney tallied 11 points in the second half to lead the Engineers.
  • Yearwood went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range after halftime on his way to 13 second half points.
 
For The Knights
  • Yearwood finished with at least 20 points in a game for the fourth time in eight contests this season. He rounded out the day 7-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-5 from three-point range.
  • Sienke reached double-figures for the fourth straight game with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting. He added five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
  • Figueroa led the Mount with eight rebounds, chipping in four points, a block and a steal.
 
For The Engineers
  • Angbazo led three players in double-figures with 17 points on 8-for-19 shooting. She closed a strong afternoon with six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals.
  • Mahoney contributed 15 points and seven rebounds to the win.
  • Rubin closed the victory with 15 points, going 4-for-4 from the floor, including three triples.
  • Dom Black finished up with five points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 42.3-percent overall and went 4-for-18 from three-point range.
  • RPI converted at 47.4-percent, connecting on eight three-pointers.
  • RPI outscored the Mount 15-6 from the free-throw line.
  • The Engineers outscored the Mount by six both in the paint and in transition.
  • RPI finished with a 14-9 advantage in points off of turnovers.

  • Mount Saint Mary closes out the 2021 portion of the schedule on December 30 at Marywood.
  • RPI opens the St. John Fisher Tournament on December 29 against Oswego State.
