Newburgh, N.Y. – Playing in its first game since December 11, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team used an 11-0 run over the final 3:27 of regulation time to pull past Maritime 63-56 Wednesday night.
Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the way with 20 points, while
Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) posted a double-double for the Knights.
Wednesday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 4-6 overall on the season and to 2-0 in league play, while Maritime falls to 3-8 and 0-5 in conference action.
First Half
- Mount Saint Mary got off to a fast start with back-to-back three-pointers from Yearwood to open a quick 6-0 lead.
- The Mount maintained the lead in the early going until a pair of Alec Downes free-throws gave Maritime its first lead of the night at 9-7 just under seven minutes into the contest.
- Jayden Racca (New Fairfield, Conn.) buried a triple with 11:19 left before halftime to regain the advantage for the Knights at 13-11 before the Privateers answered with the next six points to take a 17-13 lead.
- Maritime held the advantage until back-to-back three-pointers from Tom Spero (Massapequa, N.Y.) pushed the Mount back in front 24-21 with just under five minutes left before halftime.
- Spero connected on his third three of the game to extend the lead to 27-23 with 3:28 left in the half before a Jaxon Baker (Barnegat, N.J.) bucket gave the Knights its largest lead of the frame at 29-23 with 2:55 left in the period.
- Maritime closed the half with the final four points, buckets from Mike Regan and Jaylin Gray, to pull to within 29-27 after 20 minutes of action.
- Mount Saint Mary finished the first half shooting 38.5-percent overall and 41.2-percent from three-point range.
- Maritime shot 33.3-percent overall and went 0-for-10 from behind the arc.
- Spero led all scorers at the intermission with nine points, finishing the half 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Second Half
- Maritime tallied the first four points of the second half to regain the lead at 31-29 on a lay-in from Griffin McNally 1:23 into the second half.
- Mount Saint Mary would knot the score twice in the early going of the second half before an 11-2 spurt from the Privateers, capped by a Downes three-pointer, gave Maritime a 44-35 lead with 11:20 left I regulation.
- Maritime spread its lead to 54-44 on a Regan three-point play with 7:00 left before the Knights mounted their final charge.
- Following the three-point play from Regan, the Mount scored the next eight points to slice its disadvantage to just 54-52 following a Figueroa layup with 5:10 left to play.
- Robbie Mitchell followed with a pair of free-throws to give Maritime a 56-52 lead with 4:44 left, but the Privateers would not score again in the game.
- Mount Saint Mary scored the final 11 points of the tilt, getting conversions from Yearwood and Figueroa to tie the score at 56-56 with 2:44 left.
- Yearwood drained a three-pointer with 2:01 left to give the Knights a 59-56 lead and the Knights went 4-for-4 from the free-throw down the stretch to secure the victory.
- The Regan conversion on the three-point play proved to be the final field goal for Maritime on the night.
- Mount Saint Mary shot just 32.4-percent from the floor after halftime and went 2-for-10 from three-point range.
- The Knights limited Maritime to 30.3-percent shooting and outscored the Privateers by three points from the free-throw line in the second half.
- Figueroa scored 16 second half points, going 7-for-10 from the field.
For The Knights
- Yearwood reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season after going 6-for-17 from the floor with four three-pointers. He added four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots to the winning effort.
- Figueroa notched his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
- Jack Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y.) hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out a career-best seven assists in the win.
- Spero wrapped up the night with a career-high nine points.
For The Privateers
- Gray led the scoring attack with 12 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists.
- Regan and Sean Flynn each wrapped up the contest with nine points.
Game Statistics
- Mount Saint Mary shot an even 35-percent from the field in the game and went 9-for-27 from three-point range.
- Maritime was held to 31.8-prcent shooting overall and to a 2-for-24 effort from three-point range.
- Mount Saint Mary outscored the Privateers 18-8 in second chance points while Maritime held the edge in points off of turnovers 13-2 and points in the paint 28-18.
