Knights Battle Past Mariners In Skyline Conference Opener

Cyran, Sienke score 14 points apiece

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team used a big second half to sneak past the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 67-66 on Wednesday night in both team's conference opener. Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) and Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) led the scoring attack for the Knights with 14 points apiece.
 
Wednesday's win is the second straight one-point victory for the Knights and moves them to 2-5 overall on the season and 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Marines drop to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
 
First Half
  • A tightly contested first half saw the Mariners use a 14-0 run covering better than four minutes to surge in front by a game-high 13 points at 27-14 with 6:57 left in the opening frame.
  • The Mariners went 6-for-7 from the floor over the run, including a pair of triples, and featured six different scorers.
  • Sienke stopped the run with a bucket at the 6:16 mark and the Knights closed the half on a 10-3 run to pull to within 30-24 at the intermission.
  • Sienke scored half of the Mount's points over the scoring run that took up 5:25.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot just 32.3-percent from the floor in the first half against a 41.4-percent effort from the Mariners.
  • Both teams finished 3-for-12 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Sienke led the Knights with seven first half tallies.
  • Blaine McDonough and Brandon Bomboy led all scorers at the break with eight points each for the visitors.
 
Second Half
  • USMMA stretched its lead back to nine points early in the second half on a Jack Bucher three-pointer with 16:42 left in regulation time.
  • The Mariners maintained the advantage until the 11:09 mark of the second half when J.P. Egan (Lansdale, Pa.) buried a three-pointer to push the Knights in front 48-47.
  • The two teams would trade the lead twice following the Egan triple, before a Nick Lucas (Sparta, N.J.) triple gave the Knights a 54-49 lead with 8:52 left to play.
  • The Lucas triple gave the Knights the lead for good in the game and a Cyran three-pointer with 7:25 left gave the Mount a game-high 59-51 lead.
  • USMMA would cut the Mount's lead to a single point four times the rest of the way, but could never pull even.
  • A Bucher jumper with 19 seconds left brought USMMA to within the final 67-66 decision.
  • The Mariners misfired on a three-pointer to win with three ticks left.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot an efficient 58.1-percent in the second half, including 5-for-11 from three-point range.
  • USMMA shot 44.8-percent after halftime and also connected on five three-pointers.
  • Cyran and Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) led the Mount's scoring attack in the second half with eight points each.
  • Bucher scored 12 points after halftime to lead all scorers in the period for the Mariners.
 
For The Knights
  • Sienke finished with a season-high 14 points on 6-for-14 shooting. He added five rebounds, four assists and a steal to the winning effort.
  • Cyran posted a career-high 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting, adding seven boards, and matching Sienke with a team-high four assists.
  • Egan notched a career-high in scoring with 11 points on the strength of a 3-for-4 effort from behind the arc.
  • Figueroa closed the night with eight points, a team-high nine rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.
 
For The Mariners
  • Bucher led all scorers with 15 points, going 6-for-10 from the floor. He added seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
  • McDonough tallied 12 points and collected six rebounds.
  • Bryce Bristow and Bomboy each scored 10 points for the Mariners.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the victory shooting an even 45-percent from the field and went 8-for-23 from three-point range.
  • USMMA converted at 43.1-percent overall and connected on eight of its 29 three-point attempts.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the Mariners 38-22 in the paint.

  • The Knights are scheduled to travel to Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.
