Knights Drop Season Opener At New Paltz

Katie Smith nets 13 points in return

New Paltz, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team returned to game action for the first time in over 600 days on Tuesday and suffered a 76-60 loss at New Paltz. After missing two seasons due to injury and Covid-19, Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) returned to the lineup and finished with a team-high 13 points for the Knights.
 
Tuesday's contest was the season opener for both squads with Mount Saint Mary falling to 0-1 overall on the season and to 4-7 against New Paltz in 11 meetings since the start of the 2009 season.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary got off to a quick start on Tuesday, shooting an even 50-percent from the floor in the opening period.
  • The Knights raced out to a 14-7 lead following a Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) lay-in with 4:41 left in the first quarter.
  • Following the Bojka bucket, the Mount did not score the remainder of the period and saw the Hawks score the final four points to close to within 14-11 after 10 minutes.
  • The Mount converted at just 33.3-percent in the second stanza, but spread its lead out to nine points on a three-point play from Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) that moved the Knights in front 20-11.
  • The Knights maintained the lead until a Brianna Fitzgerald bucket with 47 seconds left pushed the Hawks in front 28-27.
  • The Knights answered with a Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) bucket with 20 seconds left to send the Mount into the intermission with a 29-28 lead.
  • The Knights shot an even 40-percent overall in the first half, despite going 2-for-14 from three-point range.
  • Smith led the Mount with eight first half points.
  • New Paltz shot 37.9-percent before halftime, connecting on four three-pointers.
  • Lexi Van Vorst led all players at the break with nine points for the Hawks.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the third period just 3-for-13 from the floor, but connected on a pair of three-point field goals.
  • The two sides swapped the lead five times in the early going of the third period until an 11-0 run pushed the Hawks in front 45-34 with 3:30 left in the stanza.
  • After falling behind by 11, the Knights would climb back to within eight on four occasions, but would be unable to pull any closer.
  • A Cassidy Deaver conversion pushed New Paltz in front 54-44 with 6:50 left in the fourth period and the Hawks would not allow the Knights closer than that the rest of the way.
  • The Hawks' largest lead grew to 19 twice late in the game, once on an Erin Cooney bucket with 35 seconds left and again when a pair of Julia Sabatino free-throws that grew the lead to 76-57 with 25 ticks left.
 
For The Knights
  • Smith led two players in double-figures with 13 points. She finished the night 5-for-10 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, adding two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) scored 12 points in her collegiate debut, connecting on a trio of three-point field goals.
  • Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) led all players with 16 rebounds, adding three assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Tabasco finished the night with eight points and four rebounds.
  • Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) joined Keenan with a team-high three assists and chipped in seven points.
 
For The Hawks
  • Van Vorst led three players in double-figures with a game-high 15 points.
  • Maddie Gillies added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
  • Fitzgerald finished a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five helpers.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the night shooting 34.4-percent overall, 22.6-percent from three-point range and 60-percent from the free-throw line.
  • New Paltz converted at 38.2-percent overall, 29.2-percent from three-point range and 72.9-percent from the free-throw line.
  • New Paltz held the advantage in points off of turnovers 17-10.
  • The Hawks held a 16-7 edge in second chance scoring.
  • New Paltz outscored the Mount in the paint 36-26.
  • Fast break points went to the Hawks 22-8.
