Knights Upend #24 George Fox

Katie Smith nets game-high 15 points

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team scored a regular season win against a nationally ranked opponent for the first time since 2009 on Thursday night with a hard fought 61-59 home victory over #24 George Fox. Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) led a balanced scoring attack with a game-high 15 points.
 
Thursday's victory improves Mount Saint Mary to 1-1 on the season while the Bruins fall to 0-1 following their first regular season contest of the year. The match up was the first all-time between the two programs.
 
First Quarter
  • The Bruins got out to a quick 7-2 lead following a Jenna Lacey three-pointer with 7:16 left in the opening period.
  • Following the Lacey triple, the Mount used a 17-0 run covering just over six minutes to surge in front 19-7.
  • The Knights went 7-for-10 from the floor over the stretch and received eight points from Smith.
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the first quarter with a 20-12 advantage.
  • The Knights shot an even 50-percent from the floor in the first half, despite going 0-for-8 from three-point range.
 
Second Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary led the entire second period on Thursday and pushed its lead back to double-figures on an Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) bucket that pushed the Knights in front 35-25 with 93 seconds left before halftime.
  • The Mount's advantage grew to 12 points for a second time, at 37-25, on a Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) bucket in the final minute of the quarter.
  • Mount Saint Mary cooled to 38.9-percent shooting in the second frame, but connected on three triples as it outscored George Fox 17-13 heading into the intermission.
 
Third Quarter
  • The Bruins came out of the break and scored the first 13 points to surge in front 38-37 on an Erin Yoshitake triple with 4:05 left in the period.
  • The Bruins went 5-for-9 from the floor over the run, including 3-for-4 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 0-for-10 as Gorge Fox went on its opening run in the third period.
  • Mount Saint Mary regained the lead on a Smith jumper that put it back in front 39-38.
  • The lead would change hands four times starting with the Yoshitake triple, but the Mount closed the period with the final six points to break a 44-44 tie.
  • Keenan knocked in a triple with 1:31 left in the quarter to give the Knights a 47-44 lead and Shannon Phelan (Tappan, N.Y.) canned a three-pointer with 34 ticks left to send the Mount to the fourth quarter with a 50-44 advantage.
  • George Fox outscored the Knights 19-13 in the third and shot 53.8-percent overall and went 3-for-5 from three-point range.
  • The Mount struggled from long range in the third, going 2-for-13, while shooting just 23.8-percent overall.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Yoshitake hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the fourth for the Bruins, evening the score at 50-50.
  • Emily Stephens converted a lay-in to push George Fox in front 52-50 before Smith responded with a three-pointer of her own to give the Knights the lead back at 53-52.
  • George Fox spread its lead out to 57-53 on a Rachel Parks three before the Mount got a pair of free-throws from Keenan and a bucket from Smith to even the score again at 57-57.
  • Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) broke the tie with 70 seconds left in regulation and gave the Knights the lead for good with a running jumper.
  • Keenan knocked it two more free-throws with 20 seconds left to spread the lead out to 61-57 before a Stephens bucket in the closing seconds brought the Bruins to within the final 61-59 decision.
 
For The Knights
  • Smith reached double-figures for the second straight game to open the season, scoring 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting. She closed out a strong night with two rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Keenan added nine points and 12 rebounds to go along with two assists and two blocked shots.
  • Bojka and Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) led the team with three steals apiece, with Bojka chipping in eight points and Desrats collecting six rebounds.
  • Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) and Rivera both contributed eight points to the winning effort.
 
For The Bruins
  • Stephens and Yoshitake led four players in double-figures with 12 points each with Stephens leading the team with nine rebounds.
  • Alyssa Wells drained a trio of triples on her way to 11 points.
  • Rachel Parks rounded out the quartet in double-figures with 10 points.
  • Ella Roberts led all players in the game with five assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 32.4-percent overall in the game and 17.6-percent from three-point range.
  • George Fox converted at 37.3-percent overall and went 10-for-18 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the Bruins 9-5 from the free-throw line.
  • Mount Saint Mary turned 26 George Fox turnovers into a 23-10 edge in scoring off of miscues.
  • The Knights bested the Bruins in the paint 28-18.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with an 11-0 advantage in transition points.
